Adding on to the whole "match cancellation like in DOTA"
QUOTED FROM BIFF MANLY
For those not in the know, the way DOTA's safe-leave system works is:
Somebody afks/disconnects within the first 5 minutes. After a five-minute period of inactivity, the other players receive a notice that the game is safe to leave and can be left without any stats being recorded; no wins, no losses, items like boosts not consumed, etc.
Somebody afks/disconnects after the first 5 minutes. Same 5 minute inactivity period, game can be left. However, this counts as a loss. You get no punishment from the leaver-buster system, but the game still counts against you as a loss.
The five minute inactivity period is net, by the way. So a player dc's for 3 minutes, comes back and plays for 5 before losing connection again, then is dc'd for another 2 minutes. This counts as the full five minutes for the other players to safely abandon and save themselves the wasted time and effort of fighting a losing game.
Not sure how it works in their ranked system, as I avoid competitive play like the plague, though it can't be worse than what we've got.
I sometimes see posts about getting the whole match cancellation system added to LoL, or something similar. I'm pretty sure DOTA isn't going to stop Riot from using it, and it's genuinely a great thing to add.
However, I'd like to give a few of my ideas to make this system work better.
**The losing team (assuming somebody was AFK) should not lose LP, but the winning team should still gain LP. ** There's nothing more frustrating than spending 20-40 minutes in ranked just to end up with nothing to show for it. On the contrary, there's something as frustrating, which is being punished for somebody else's mistakes. Both sides win.
Make sure the whole system isn't "activated" from something as small as a 2-3 minute AFK. It generally won't affect the outcome of the game.
Obviously, still make sure those who AFK are punished. Just because they didn't cause a true loss doesn't mean they should get away with it.
Punish the other players who are queued with the AFK player. This kind of reinforces the idea that, just like you shouldn't play with a toxic friend, you shouldn't play with a friend who does something else against the rule. Also kind of relates to the whole idea of "don't team up with hackers." Perhaps they can start dishing out punishments on the second or third time players play with said AFKer
EDIT: Also, the whole "WE WON'T COPY OTHER GAMES" attitude needs to GTFO...successful concepts and/or systems should be reused, end of story.
