How does being placed with teams work????

I dont understand how being placed in teams works. When I am in a normal game i am placed against or with platinums when I am silver. In ranked games my teams either do really good or really bad. It doesnt seem balanced at all. Is there any way for league to place you with people that are similar so the games are closer??? or is it the fevered dream of a player that wants good games for once.
