[TIP] If you died fighting 1v1, but lost by only a little bit, don't fight them again.

It's tempting to but you just gave them a kill and possibly a lot more time to farm. They are going to push the advantage. The best idea is to continue to harass them and farm. Engage when you know you can win. I say this because in a good number of my games a teammate might fight them 1v1 or 2v2 and see that they lost by only a little bit, then try again and die again, further lengthening the gold gap between them.
