A convection mechanic?
I was playing Diablo 3 and got Convection of Elements.
IT
IS
FUCKING
AWESOME
Basically, it rotates through the elements available to your class in a set order and for 4 seconds damage from that element is increased by 200%. It is so fun to manage because it makes you think about whether you spend resources now for damage now or wait for so you can dump it all into burst in a few seconds. You can either look at the buff bar or the particle effect to know which element is active.
How about bringing that mechanic to League in the form of a champion?
The champion in question would have 3 elements: QWE. Instead of just more damage though, perhaps one spell gets increased damage, one gets hard cc instead of soft, and the third gets a buffed heal to allies (not self) or a debilitation to enemies.
The enemy can see which element is active and know which is coming next and can adjust their actions/tactics accordingly. R would probably be an overcharge, allowing the user to cycle through the convection faster or perhaps freeze it on a single element and allow them to spam empowered spells of a single element for a small people of time.
The counterplay is that this character is very vulnerable to hard cc because if you silence them, the convection still runs, meaning that silenceing them doesn't just delay the spell but could lock them out of the empowered version for several seconds after the silence ends, meaning that if you can correctly reason that this person wants to use an aoe nuke, you can stun them and then their empowered spell available is instead something they don't want at this moment.
The possibilities are numerous so long as QWE have very clear, distinct niches and have very clear ups and downs in any given situation.. Even if Q and empowered Q are used in 75% of situations, being able to detect that this is one of those 25% where W or E is better and denying the enemy free rein to use W or E is very skillful. Likewise, playing mindgames with your opponent by getting them to waste CC on an empowered spell that you don't need at the moment would give a really amazing outplay feeling.
