I have been trying to spectate games to understand more of the game play and such but it crashes often. I will get the spectator data not available and sometimes the game just freezes entirely. Is that just an issue on my end or is everyone suffering from the same?
It is not just you. There have been issues with Spectator Mode for the past month, at least. Every game I have tried to spectate (either a featured game or a game one of my friends is playing), I get at most 5 minutes of game viewing before the game freezes. Eventually, the "Spectator data not available" message appears. I assume you are having the same problems. Apparently Riot is aware of the problem, since there is a warning about the issues occassionally in the client.
