The problem with Ranked..

Its Set up for you to have a great chance of failing.

What?? What am I talking about??

Well Let's go through the promos. Let's say you are at 80 LP.

You win a game and it puts you at 98. You win another and you are in your promos.

Now you have to win 2/3 games just to get promoted.

Which means from 80 LP you need to win 4/5 games or have a win rate of 80%.

What about demotion?

You are at 0 LP You win a game. Then you lose 2 in a row. You are now instantly demoted.

So that's 1/3 win rate or 33%.

What does this mean?

Win rate required to be promoted: 80% Loss Rate required to be demoted: 66%

So when it comes to being promoted, the ranked system works against you. But when it comes to being demoted, the ranked system also works against you.

Now I understand the concept of "oh well its easier to lose than it is to win!"

But Here's what I think needs to happen:

Demotion Series

or

Rank Elo

Demotion Series

Basically if you lose at 0 LP you go into a Demos, which is exactly like Promos.

So you would have to win 1 game at 0LP, then lose a game to go into demotions. Then lose 2 MORE games to get demoted.

so you would have a 75% loss rate to get demoted. Not the same as Promoted still, but closer.

The alternative?

Rank Elo. Where there are no promos and as soon as you hit the "elo target" you become the next rank up. Then it gives you a 100 Elo boost and the only way you get demoted is to drop below that same target.

I agree with you that the system does work against you. If you go on a winning streak the system starts rewarding you with less LP, if you go on a losing streak there is no bufffer for you, you start losing more LP. A demotion series would be a nice thing to have. The reasoning behind the less LP I believe is to prevent you from advancing on a lucky streak. But then why isn't there a similar system for when you go on an unlucky streak? That gives you a small buffer for when you do have those off days?

Rank Elo. Where there are no promos and as soon as you hit the "elo target" you become the next rank up. Then it gives you a 100 Elo boost and the only way you get demoted is to drop below that same target.

You're confusing Elo and LP. If your system involves giving arbitrary 100 point boosts to people, it isn't Elo.

Generally agree that promotion series aren't adding much to the game, though.

I know the system seems really unfair when you get a few losses, especially in your promo or just after you advance (and you get demoted again), but the thing that makes it fair in an unnoticeable way is that everyone has to deal with the same shit.
