Smiting Blue should give HP not MP

With smite becoming far more valuable as a ganking, unique buffing, and clearing mechanic, to get some mana back for smiting blue seems very underwhelming and unrealistic as junglers are stuck between saving smite for an actually useful effect, or smiting blue to clear it faster and end with slightly higher hp. The difficulty of camps has gone much higher and if you start red and end with blue, you are at a huge hp disadvantage from starting blue to red. It clearly sets one route over another which shuts down any decision making and interactive playing that Riot has been so hyped about. Also, the mana seems redundant as the blue buff itself gives you mana regen and thereby filling up ur mana pool anyways.

That smite reward is important if you aren't selfish and you give up blues to your mid. Having a way to regain mana in the jungle is just as important as health on some champions

It's a pretty useless thing to smite for since the normal blue buff gives huge mana regen anyway. It definitely needs to be changed. Not to health though.

Well it does allow you to get mana from the buff without taking it. You can smite it for mana and still give it to your mid laner. Otherwise, you prolly shouldn't be starting on blue, and you shouldn't be smiting it.

I think they could keep blue buff giving mana return on smite, so long as they also added a health component to its smite reward.

Maybe it could reduce cooldowns? Think Zilean, only not as good.
