Nautilus Jungle- Explain to me why it doesnt work please.

I have always liked using Naut in the jungle. Havent used him much this season since the shield nerfs and people said it ruined him. I picked him two games in a row the other day however and I won one and lost one. The loss was debatably not might fault as I had a support Velkoz fighting with my adc all game and I had an Ezreal top lane feed a Darius, which I don't even understand. Both games I did well and felt very strong.

My clears were a little slow, but I never got low on HP. I was able to start gromp with shield at lvl 1, then goto blue with a point in E at lvl 2. Clear my wolves and beaks. At 3 I put a second point in my shield and kept clearing my red side jungle. All without backing and then went top for a kill as soon as I hit 4.

I see where maybe I might be vulnerable to some counter jungling or invading, but if my team is paying attention this shouldn't be too bad.

Typically I build a bit tanky, sunfire cape, trailblazers with tank enchant, mobi boots, Rightgeous Glory, or MR as needed. Then ROA AND Abyssal for some punch.

I end up always feeling strong and tanky. Just walking around peeling and AA'ing the enemy team for my passive procs. Blocking skill shots and feeling HUGE after my elixir late game.

Why does everyone hate Naut?

He needs a bigger model.

Here's the problem;

Play a game as Naut,

Then play a game as Jarvan.

Skillshot gapcloser w/ hard cc and a shield gank pattern on both junglers. High impact engage ult late game both junglers. Buuuuut:

Jarvan has among the fastest early clears in the game and Naut has the slowest Jarvan deals a ton of damage with very minimal investment and therefore represents a credible threat that needs to be focused, Naut does not and offers barely more cc. Jarvan can wall jump, and can get vision and choose not to go in Jarvan is far more mana efficient Jarvan's hard cc is AOE

Tell me why I should pick a champ who is jarvans equal but trades one of the best early games for one of the worst.

Hey dude. My reply might be a little long, but I encourage you to read the whole post because it will clarify your question regarding the Naut hate.

To make a long story short Tank junglers have fallen out of favor in the community because: (1) They are 100% dependent on the team in order to be successful. (2) They do not do damage. (3) Bruiser/Assassin junglers exist.

Let me just go over those points. (1) - Tank junglers are really just roaming supports in this game. The only purpose they serve is to defend their carries while also providing initiation opportunities. So if your team is either (a) not very skilled, (b) mad at each other, or (c) behind, you're going to have a very difficult game. Tank junglers are basically support champions, and if their teammates are a, b, or c, then there's nobody to support and carry you to victory.

The last two points go hand in hand, so let me explain them together. Basically, tank junglers just don't do damage and aren't really a threat to the enemy carries. Bruiser/assassin junglers can kill carries. People figured out that they can just pick something that kills the enemy carries, thus removing the threat that tank junglers are meant to defend against. Because of this, tank junglers have seen a massive decline in popularity over the seasons.

Tank junglers are, of course, still awesome, but only if your team actually works together and tries to win. If your team is just going to self-destruct and not work together (which happens most of the time in solo-q) then you'll find many more "consistent" games by playing bruiser junglers over tank junglers.

Oh, and lastly there's build paths. Bruiser junglers (like Vi, J4, Lee Sin) can start off with very aggressive Rune/Mastery set ups and choose to spec into either Tank/Bruiser/Assassin build paths depending on how the game is going. Tanky junglers, such as Naut, Mao, and Malphite, are pretty much forced to build into Tank items because their ability kits generally revolve around support.

I find that Nautilus is a strong champion, and he's one of my favourite junglers, however his main issue is that he's a bit overshadowed by champions who can provide utility and damage such as Jarvan and Lee Sin. They are more flexible in their build path (damage if ahead, tank if behind), scale better with kills, and are better at carrying games without relying as heavily on their teammates.

That said, many players in solo queue will pick damage-oriented champions with low utilityand durability, in which case Nautilus shines. He has enough CC to make up for several members, can get his allies few through his powerful ganks, and can protect or set up plays for his allies. He can still be a strong champion, be he requires more coordination and/or competence on the part of your teammates to help carry teamfights later in the game, which many players in soloqueue don't like.

He's honestly not as bad damage-wise as some people claim. Juggernaut + Skirmisher's Sabre (get Ranger's Trailblazer early, but switch before completing), Sunfire Cape, Frozen Heart, and Locket of the Iron Solari give him a lot of utility, durability, CDR, and decent damage. He doesn't have damage comparable to bruisers, but he can still deal a lot of AOE damage in a fight and be a threat you can't actually kill.

Though, I think some people believe that the prevalence of percent-health damage and resistance reduction/penetration make pure tanks unviable, which might be part of why they consider him weak.

nautilus is sorta weak early game but his late game is exceptional, especially compared to j4 or vi

the jungle isn't very kind to champions with weak early games that scale well right now due to very low income, so champions like amumu and nautilus are weak.

get a triforce

Higher ranking :

Invade naut, Get a free kill, Farm, Repeat.

And since lower elos almost only check higher rankings...

Naut is amazing. The perception of weakness is only that he's not Lee Sin with his jack-of-all-trades kit.

GundayMonday2/11/2015, 10:18:01 PM1 votes

He doesn't have damage when built optimally. That's pretty much the only reason. No matter how fed you get, you will just lose team fights really slowly if your teammates don't have their carry pants on.

He's honestly ridiculously strong, but you still need someone on your team that can do the damage and take advantage of your massive cc kit.

Naut has some of the best lock down in the game. He can even lock down Kalista. He just can't kill her himself.

Overall he's just too weak in the early game.

Also building RoA that late in the game doesn't have much of a point. Liandry's would fit him better either way.

All he needs is his passive to deal bonus damage to minions to help his clear speed.

Fitz n The Fool2/11/2015, 11:54:39 PM1 votes

Just build him full tank. Any AP item is basically worthless because your damage is garbage after 15 minutes anyways. Liandrys is okay since it gives health as well but if you think you're doing any meaningful damage with AP items you're mistaken. IBG is not good. His cooldowns are way too long. Frozen heart is a better buy for mana.

No Idea. I have played him with relative success this season. I start krugs and then go on the clear the redside, and then move onto blue buff and the blue side.

Any champ can work and be amazing if you know how to play them buddy

FHMarshy2/11/2015, 4:33:26 PM1 votes

I think the main reason is that Naut isn't bringing that much presence in comparison to many other junglers who are currently top tier.
