Learning curve? What can be done about this?
FOR THE LAST TIME, THIS POST IS NOT ABOUT THE AMOUNTS OF SKILL REQUIRED FOR CHAMPIONS. IT IS ABOUT TEACHING NEW PLAYERS BASIC KNOWLEDGE SO THAT THEY CAN GET INTO LEARNING THE MECHANICS OF CHAMPIONS WHILE ALREADY HAVING A BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF HOW THE GAME IS PLAYED
I'll try to explain all that I can think of as actually being part of the learning curve in League of Legends...
- Basics. Level 1-15 or 1-20 or whatever. How to point a mouse, right click and press buttons and what-not.
- I think the next thing you would learn is smart casting. (this isn't exactly in order)
- cs. point > click. ez
- Whatever else that is simple.
There we go. All the things that take years to learn. I probably left a few things out, but whatever. Seriously, if there was some kind of true tutorial out there, we would be able to mass produce diamond-bound players like wildfire. Why doesn't this exist? It would probably take a month at most. And not like all the tutorials we have out there on Youtube (the ones that go: press w, point here, mash keyboard a few times, acquire pentakills). actually instructive videos telling new players what they should be doing so that they don't flame each other and call each other bad.
What is there after this?
- Map. I can't believe I actually have to put this in the advanced section. You are literally averting your eyes for less than a second.
- Other, slightly advanced tactics that won't take you more than a week AND having the knowledge of what to do.
Is this hard for all you bronzies to do? Maybe if someone hadn't been stupid enough to let you go without a leash (a metaphorical leash that you put, and take off, DOGS), right clicking on enemy champions and facerolling while playing riven and katarina. What really makes a good player? What's the difference between a good player and a bad player?
Decision-making skills.
Probably the one thing in this game that you can't really help someone with, except by holding their hand through the games that they play, which oddly enough is something that happens in DOTA 2. But the thing is, how are people supposed to make these decisions when they don't even know what their options are in the first place? Learning the game is very important. And yes, the only way for this to happen is through experience. The only thing is, this progress can be heavily sped up just by teaching these things to new players, or even just by giving them a shove in the right direction.
Now, I only mean these things to a certain extent. If you feel that people should be able to play the champions they want and learn the mechanics they want, this is still possible. But all the things that every. single. good. player. knows, and honestly wouldn't be very hard to teach people. But dropping all these things on players who have just got into the game with 100% free will just leads to them not listening and being lazy. If warding and map awareness are truly important, why don't we make this something that people just know to be a part of the game? The many problems that can be avoided just go on and on.
TL;DR I really hope you didn't think that arguing about all this learning is going to contribute. If the purpose of this game is to have fools running around in lower ELOs who have not a single clue of what they are to be doing except, "kill the nexus" then, for the sake of MOBAs, you have done a pretty good job. This game has been out for nearly six years and still, this simple solution to a problem that literally everyone who is in gold and below are crying everywhere about is not being done. It's not hard. Players need a little guidance. Point new players in the right direction.
I'm not saying we should dictate everything that new players should be doing. I'm saying that we should ease them into learning the things that they should be, without them having to worry about how all of their future teammates that they are going to have are going to flame them for how terrible their mechanics are. Players can still be given the opportunity to learn champions and all the advanced mechanics of this game, but teaching them about the basics and such THE CORRECT WAY, just gives a much, much more sturdier base for players to have, instead of being set into an open world with complete free reign to do absolutely whatever with the main important parts of the game come after. Or not to come after. Really hard to tell with the players in this game these days.
