How a Singe-player campaign could help League (The Re-post)
Let's cut right to the chase shall we? I believe that a single player campaign (aka story mode) could help newer league players learn the mechanics of the game in a fun, exciting, and interesting way.
We can all agree that League has problems, but the biggest, and at the same time most overlooked problem is the games steep learning curve. To put it simply there's just a lot of stuff for a single person to know in order to play the game correctly. For examples there are currently 139 characters for a new player to choose from. Imagine booting up Street Fighter for the first time to see a roster of 139 fighters. Also adding to that players have to know about champions, champion match-ups, items, item actives, the different roles, stats, and etc. To a new player it must be overwhelming, in fact I remember it being overwhelming as well, I was lucky enough to have friends who could guide me through it. But some people don't have friends who are experienced in League, so they're going in almost blind. I say almost blind because I have to give credit where credit is due, does have a tutorial to teach the basics. But when I say basics, I mean bare bones basic. Also the tutorial could use some updating (insert Thornmail Ashe memes here). In it's current state Riot provides 2 small tutorials and then release new players into the wild, it's the online equivalent of birds kicking their young out of the nest while yelling "FLY!"
"Now how exactly would a campaign change this?" You may be asking. Well, just take a look at, ironically enough, Call of Duty (primarily the Modern Warfare Series). In edition to being fairly entertaining, almost every mission in the Modern Warfare campaigns teach the player how to perform one aspect of multiplayer. The MW1 Mission "All Gillied Up" teaches the player how to play stealthy and snipe. The MW2 Mission "Loose Ends" teaches players how to defend objectives and fight in enclosed environments. The MW3 Mission "Iron Lady" teaches the player how to effetely fight using kill streaks and how to deal with long-range engagements. Essentially each mission of CoD would boil down to a fancy tutorial with explosions and rapid gunfire. This formula could be easily translated over to League. What better way to teach players that characters like
,
, and
can tank damage and protect allies than in a mission where they have to protect a Demacian convoy from Noxian raiders (Maybe with
or
as a final boss?). Or a mission where
or
destroy structures and fight off security bots to teach players that these champs are good at taking objectives. Or maybe one where
and/or
are sn eaking into a facility, maybe to assassinate
before he can get away? The possibles are (kinda but not really) endless!
**TL,DR: **A single player campaign could help new players learn how to play the game in a low-stress and easy way.
