Why pick Nautilus over Tahm Kench

So, the title.

Can anyone who mains either champ and preferably plays both explain to me when they would pick the former over the latter?

Tahm has way more damage, the same amount of cc with more stickyness, and is about twice as tanky, has a suppression and an ally moveable zhonya, with an almost global teleport for his allies.

Nautilus has a rooting passive with a cooldown on its target, an aoe slow, a hook to setup his passive (and escape), and a point-click knockup, but does almost no damage (except if ap).

Yes, I realise Tahm's cc is almost completely melee and Nautilus can be a threat at a greater range but I would like to know regardless if there is something I am missing.

Nautilus has a point and click knock up and better CC.

Nautilus is basically the single best CC specialist in the game. Clearly, you'd want to pick Naut over Tahm when you need the CC and can sacrifice the damage.

Actually, I never found nautilus DMG that low until 25+ minutes. I mean, full combo can take out ~75% of squishies HP

Well, Tam has to strike enemies three times before his abilities can stun them.

Naut strikes the enemy once and then decides not to use an ability because they are already cced, but he could if he wants to.

Nautilus actually has a lot more cc then Tahm, Passive is a Stun on auto attack for 1.5s roughly every 6s at max. This cooldown only applies to individual champions so he could effectively stun five champions with five auto attacks and almost be ready to stun the first champion again when he is finished. Q is a great initiate or retreat tool. E provides an area effect slow. And his ult is target knock up that if used properly can knock up an entire team in a fight.

Tahm's Q is a slow, and after three autos becomes a stun. His W I guess is like a suppress that also requires three autos and severely slows Tahm in the process, however it is a great tool for saving an ally that is caught out. His ult distance is also less the half the area of the map. Now don't get me wrong, I am not saying Tahm isn't good, because he is very strong right now. He just doesn't provide the same kind or amount of instant cc that Nautilus can, and he is a little less mobile aside from his channeled ult.

In the end both are very good tank supports that can survive in large teamfights, Tahm will dish out more damage, and Nautilus will provide more cc. All comes down to who you enjoy more because both are viable in my opinion. I personally prefer Nautilus because of his stronger initiation and cc. He can also instantly knock an enemy champion out of a channeling ability which is nice.

Tahm's kit is completely a single target CC kits, while Nautilus has a bunch of AoE team CC kits. Preferably you should pick Naut over Tahm when your team needs a hard engage.

Fowus11/4/2015, 12:45:08 AM1 votes

naut has that on hit root and a lot more cc, his Q lets him be more mobile and also works as an initiation

TahmKench is a tank utility support

Nautilus is a tanky cc support

You would pick Tahm Kench against pick comps and assassin heavy comps. He is a great pick for peeling and protecting your carries.

You would pick Nautilus when against a kiting composition, protect the ADC or sieging composition as you will need his engaging power. He is a great pick for targeting the enemy carry and CCing them long enough to insure a kill for your team.

stop. just stop. they are two different champs and thats a fact. last time i heard someone saying "why pick skarner if you could pick hecarim" it gave me cancer and now the tumor is getting back at me
