He was nearly impossible to kill and had a large damage output. I find it kind of unfair that ADCs have great defensive itemization while mages have such few options that are expensive such as

It does sound like a scary build. Mages aren't given too many defensive stat options and if they are it's very small. RoA and Seraphs are your only hope.
try ap heros with stuns slows jumps if not then go into the tree of survivability ull live longer man and get ur summoners on faster cd! get that with cd boots and distortion play safe only till ur flash is up still problems? buy a qss it isnt bad on a ap hero if it helps u live get it!

u can also just straight up go defense items as well
most of the time, the adc's only go one defensive item anyway
the few i can think of are barely that defensive stat wise but just have good actives and passives
Sterak's Gage, Mercurial Scimitar, Banshee's Veil, Guardian Angel, and rarely a Frozen Mallet and/or an Iceborn Gauntlet.
the reason it works on ez is bcuz u jsut get slowed automatically with the q, and he has great kiting and chase to secure kills
also his base stats are nice cuz he does both ad and ap damage
