New HUD is fine

I actually like the new hud. It takes some getting used to, but once you do, all the info is right there. I actually got annoyed when I played a ranked game and could not use the new hud. Rez timers and team health right above the minimap is soooooo useful.

Maybe there are some tweaks that could arguably be made to make it more palatable to people, but honestly, the new info layout is way better than the old one. At this point, hating the hud is just a fashionable bandwagon to hop on, but the hate is just a meme. Nothing of substance.

I just hate the stats section and (including C) because its hard to read and the icons aren't very discernible (at quick glance they look basically identical across the entire stat section unlike before, extremely bad change here). I find myself having to regularly hold mouse over stats just to confirm I am reading things right (crit chance, penetration, etc.). If they fix this I think it would be considerably improved over the old one after we get used to it. In order to fix this, however, they will have to change the stat icons and colors going on there because it is horrific.

But the complaints over it are valid. All the information is congested into one spot, which actually decreases clarity, contrary to what Riot was intending. Additionally, the colors are hard on the eyes, and the ally health bars / portraits are miniscule and difficult to read. Riot acknowledged some of this on Reddit and is working on changes. White knighting for Riot about a project that needs improvements is just as bad as jumping on the bandwagon.

It's wonderful that you think it's okay. However the overwhelming majority of the playerbase disagrees. Everyone has their own opinions on why the new HUD is shitty, but all in all i see a good 3/5-4/5 people in each game who agree with me. What are my reasons?

  1. Im used to everything being in its original space. Looking around for the same information is annoying. When I want to see my CS and Score I look up, not at the minimap. When I want to see my team's death timers i look to the left side not the minimap. When I want to see enemy armor/ad/mr/ats etc. I click on them and look up into something that isn't microscopic and now clumped even more with irrelevant things like CDR and Attack range. When I want to check my EXP till next level I look bottom left not next to my abilities.

Looking at all those things in a split second vs. looking around for 3 seconds can change your gameplay tremendously. In game things go by fast like in a car. If you spend more time looking for things distracted with all this bulky clumped up non player friendly interface, you're going to miss cs and take harass at the least.

  1. It's all bulky and clumped up. I scaled my HUD down to 30-50% and still the death timers on both teams stacking up above the minimap are extremely annoying.

  2. There was nothing wrong with the original interface anyways. All information was accessible with a quick Tab or hotkeys and to be honest the new interface doesn't give you much more information. Also, what the hell is the point of being an aware and active player? Being more aware than your opponents should give u an advantage. Why shouldn't pressing Tab that your lazy opponents aren't willing to do not give you the edge? Why does everything have to be right in front of you? You can't use ur head a bit?

  3. 90% of the people who say the new interface is okay are infrequent players in comparison to the amount that more dedicated players play. I understand it wouldn't be difficult for someone who only plays 1-2 games a day at most to get used to.

  4. What bugs me most is that they A. Didn't give us a clear option to revert to the original HUD. B. After the more tech savvy players figured out how to change the config in the league files to get the original HUD, they fucking fixed that and now we can't revert at all. That says that they don't want to give us a choice. Wtf kind of attitude is that from a game developer?

I'm glad you like the new HUD but at the very least they should offer to have the original interface available for less versatile players. P.S. Idk why it made my points go 1 1 2 3 4 it's whatever.

Intentions were good, however the outcome is tragic. I couldn't care less about how fugly this HUD is, it's the clutter, lack of clarity and the fact that everything except for the map is in the opposite spot. It simply just does not function as intended. Crashed and burned.

Gafugarion7/26/2015, 10:50:54 PM7 votes

My only request is put the times with the cs and kda back up at the top right. Everything else I can adjust to, but I can not for the life of me understand why cs and time is split across the screen.

buster kiton7/26/2015, 6:29:17 PM6 votes

Yeah, it's not as bad as people make it sound but I'd still prefer the old one. Granted, this new hud has some cool stuff but I just don't like how all the information is in the same place.

layout is garbage

Kanade7/27/2015, 2:10:30 PM4 votes

Sure you like it, and many others too. Another large group of us hate it. There is a very simple way to avoid pissing off anyone here. Adding in an option to choose which one you want makes literally everybody happy. If they complain about lack of resources/added difficulty of dealing with a second one, remind them that it was their dumbass choice to implement a change to something that worked perfectly fine in the first place. Once they figure out that they screwed up, they can fix it. Until they admit that, they're not going do do a damn thing we want them to. Screw off with calling hating the hud just a fad. You might not feel the same, but there are plenty of us with a ton of valid reasons to hate it. I couldn't care less what you think of it, because it's fine. Use this hud if you want. A lot of us are just quitting the game until the old one is available. I cannot stand to even look at this game with the new hud. The layout is confusing and flat out bad. Just because you deem it better doesn't mean that it's arbitrarily better for everyone now.

The fact that Riot forces their opinion on their playerbase is just horrible. Some like the new HUD, whereas others dislike it. Why not give us the option to change it from the in-game settings menu? I prefer the old one, but I like to change it from time to time not play with 1 theme forever.

ArcticWolf247/26/2015, 6:14:09 PM3 votes

I agree especially when you TAB and see the summoner timers for your team ( also nice for smite ) and you can change the spots of champions for lane matchups

I love the new HUD, but I HATE the new timer system. Seriously, what's the point of warding Dragon/Baron if you're just gonna get a timer anyway? 90% of the point of warding them was so you could get a timer, but now that we get that for free, I might as well save that ward for the Krugs/Blue Bush area.

Seriously, I like having more wards available and all, but this is just unnecessary. This is moving LoL towards a dangerous direction for matchmaking: One that requires little to no vision control and teamwork. I don't care if the proposed excuse is "Nobody buys vision in pubs so why require something to have vision?", that's not an excuse to remove a warding spot. Now the only point to warding drag is to see if they're doing it, and odds are minimal at best. Seriously, the chances of warding WHILE they're doing/prepping drag are laughable. You'd basically have to have Amaz's RNG to do it.

The new teammate icons placement is terrible for healers and Shen. The stats aren't very clear either.

Maybe just because you don't agree with an opinion doesn't it mean it lacks substance.

Keevalroy7/27/2015, 2:16:20 AM3 votes

Regardless of how "fine" it is to people, there should be an option for if we want the old format. Why should we be forced to adapt to a change that only affects the UI visuals? It should be up to the player to decide whether or not we want a new one - don't just throw up your hands and tell us to get used to it after a change like this.

Krys Star7/27/2015, 7:29:32 AM3 votes

I just hate how tiny and miniscule the icons and numbers are. I've got pretty bad sight, but even with glasses it's still a bit hard for me to see the numbers and fonts. Maybe because I decreased the HUD to 70% since the hud itself is HUGE.

Blinklynx7/27/2015, 2:08:21 AM2 votes

I have the disagree with the complaint about the new placement of the character portraits. Map awareness is very important to a game, so presumably everyone is keeping a close eye on their minimap while they lane to see where the enemy is, if the enemy jungler is coming, if there is a fight to teleport to, etc. Being able to glance upwards a bit to see the portraits is so good now. i always thought it was really annoying having to move your eyes back and forth between the left and right of your screen just to keep tabs on people's health and ults. In addition, the new portraits have new ult timers. Now you can see how long before your teammates ults come up. And being able to see death timers without alt tabbing?

This is really good stuff. I understand that having to learn entirely new things can be pain, and we should definitely give feedback. We should say things like "the new hud max size is too small, but otherwise it has some really good things going on". Saying things like "new hud gives me cancer, please bring back the old".....that sort of commentary is just no good.

I just totally hate the TAB Menu!!! I can't see s**t and I can't find myself in the menu ffs.

Grizby7/27/2015, 5:58:42 AM2 votes

i hate the fact that I cant see what stats my opponent invested in like I could with the last HUD (the stat number would be green if it was boosted, or pale blue if not modified). huge huge HUGE difference. if they could bring that back, then the new HUD would be okay and then id get used to it.

For Carthage7/28/2015, 1:02:09 PM2 votes

It has everything cluttered into one space with several other bits just left about the screen. It's not the worst, but it's not all right.

The primary gripe I've had, though, is that the info's too goddamn small while for some reason pressing tab wallpapers my screen. Checking stats is about the most jarring thing you can do in-game right now.

NeoScout7/28/2015, 4:33:33 AM2 votes

I like it better too

iainB857/27/2015, 12:39:46 AM2 votes

I like that I can leave my extra stats panel open.

I like the new minimap and easily telling how many minions are in a lane.

I like the ultimate cooldown timers on my team mates.

I like seeing respawn timers over the new minimap.

All those things I miss when I play ranked. If they would just make the UI movable so people could put this information where they want, we'd be golden.

I just don't like the fact that I have to look down in the corner for absolutely EVERYTHING. my own score, my team score, my teammate statuses, and everywhere else is just blank.

iTri Hard7/27/2015, 2:24:03 AM2 votes

The issue's not about whether it's fine or not. It's about whether people have the choice or not. Whether or not I believe in the act of being gay I still voted yes because I'm pro-choice just because someone sees something differently doesn't mean that there can only be one approach.

Jeanne fan club7/27/2015, 1:53:00 AM1 votes

I think its funny how people complain about not seeing their stats when all they need to do is click the little helmet underneath their champ portrait.
