How did I dodge?

So I decided to try the game mode event thing and I went in like usual picked my champ (fiddlesticks) waited till the timer counted down then there was a ban screen I banned a champ...then it went to the champ selection again for some odd reason and I still had fiddlesticks in and after the timer counted down I got a deserter? What the heck? There was a dude that didn't even have a champ in his frame and but I got a deserter? Can someone explain how I got a deserter? Is there something I did or didn't do to get this?
