Question for Reds and knowledgeable people about normal MMR

(My thread disappeared, I'll try again)

So...I'm not good...I know that...but I'm trying. Yesterday I played a normal game where I was top lane as Jayce paired against a Darius. I did ok in the laning phase...I think I was 4-2 or 4-1 by the end of it...the others lost their lanes though and we wound up eventually losing a marathon game. No big deal, was fun. But I looked up the guy I was against in the game and he was a level 30 Bronze 2 player...I was notably 20 at the time...maybe 21.

I don't have a problem with that...just a question. Does that mean that I'm currently on pace to be placed in high bronze in 9 more levels? Or am I on a pace for better than that as it's placing me up against them when i'm 9-10 levels lower than them? Just seemed kind of weird...and I'm curious how that all works. I'm notably trying not to be discouraged by the whole "bronze" thing though hehe.

I know I have a long way to go to be anywhere close to decent...but I am trying to improve and I'm not the kind of person that just blames teammates etc. We may have lost mid and bot lanes...but we were still in a good position 30 minutes in and we controlled dragon the whole time...there's undoubtedly things I could do better to help carry...just have to learn them. Thanks to those who might take the time to answer my MMR question.

I honestly wouldn't let a single enemy player's rating infer anything about where you could possibly be placed. Teams are matched up according to a composite MMR, which is an average of each individual team member's MMR. He may have been bronze, but he may have also had a Platinum level teammate. Judging where you currently stand by observing only one enemy MMR is ineffective with that dynamic.

Also of note, there are separate ratings for normal queues, for solo/duo ranked queues, and for ranked team queues. If a person is ranked Silver in solo queue, he could possibly have what would be considered a "Gold" level MMR in normals. What I'm trying to say is after your initial placement, your normal queue MMR will not have an impact on your ranked status.

Finally, just be encouraged that you were able to do as well as you did in lane when your summoner level was so much lower and you were either playing without runes or with weak ones at best. Those last few levels will likely be the hardest because you will begin to see more and more matchmaking pitting you against lvl 30s, and I'd wager that more than a few will be more fierce opponents than that Darius. Don't give up, learn as much as you can from everything (your failures, your opponents, opposing strategies, etc.), and always have fun!

EDIT: Also, one tip I'll toss out there is this: Vision wins games. Doesn't matter where you are playing from, if you have room in your inventory and 75-150 gold lying around, grab some wards. Keep high traffic areas, gank lanes, buffs, and objectives warded as best you can. You will notice that in most games the team with the most vision (and the most initiative to work around it) will win. Good luck!

Ill try to make this short. Normal MMR is somewhat representative of your skill, but since it is separate from ranked MMR, it is not always good to judge skill based off of normal MMR. Someone who plays only ranked games will have low normal MMR, so you could be against a diamond player in normals because he didn't play very many normals.
