Objectives:

  • How does Ryze's new passive function?
  • Targeted Q
  • Spell Flux Change
  • Why so much CDR on his ult? (And how it affects itemization)
  • What does his ideal build look like post 4.9?
  • Early/Mid game concerns and possibilties with example
  • Wrap-Up

From what I've seen in the posted video it looks like Ryze has a similar feel. You're high damage window is all about spamming while your supercharge is up. Does the shield have to stay up in order to spam your abilities or are they independent of each other, and how does your mana shield scale? Is it based on level or your amount of mana?

The Q change was expected. The range is nice, but the damage might be underwhelming.

The % resist change on spell flux is nice for his late game theme especially if you take a heavy AP team comp, although changing the bounce mechanic makes it harder to burst someone down without the 3 hit proc in 1 v 1 situations.

The one thing I'm having trouble understanding is the 30% CDR. I don't mind moving it to his ultimate as you get 10% CDR at level 6 instead of at level 9 like it is currently. The thing is many of his popular builds allow him to cover all his defensive bases and achieve his ideal 40% CDR rather easily through items. It does open options such as RoA, Arch Staff, VS, Boots, Righteous Glory, (6th item), but high health builds leave concerns with survivability. It's nice to have the option to forego having to buy CDR but i'm not sure how your supposed to build him as a tank without overspending on CDR.

Lets say your facing a balanced team comp (3/ad+2/ap or vice versa). Typically you would want to build 1 AR/MR item each such as:

Archangel Sorc Boots RoA (some prefer righteous glory) Void Staff Frozen Heart Spirit Visage

  • There of course are other build options if the enemy doesn't create a balanced team, but there is always a need for armor due to ADC's. All the health in the world doesn't do much without resistances behind it. As a side note, the mana shield also scales off your ability to tank damage - more resistances mean the shield lasts longer.

Above is my current Ryze item set to go with 15/0/15 masteries as well as scaling mana, magic pen and spellvamp quints. High sustain, maximum mana, and execution ability. I don't take the 5% CDR from masteries since its wasted after a certain point with this build and you play for Mid/Late game as Ryze anyways.

** I could always move into more defensive masteries on a situational basis for a 0/21/9 build. I'd hate to go down from that 15 in utility and lose the extra 5% mana and 3% spell vamp after already surrendering damage from the offense tree though.

Based off the proposed rework, I would have 20% more CDR then I need with this build. I can swap out Visage for Banshees, but then your losing that awesome passive, and banshees just isn't the same anymore. Ideally, you want to have mana on your armor item, but both options have CDR as well. You could always build an armor item without mana, but it's hard to justify. GA covers both AR/MR, but it's less then ideal IMO.

Given his slight nerf to base and scaling health, your ability to survive seems dependent on your mana shield and having it available when you need it, especially during his weak early game. It also looks to have an internal CD to limit having his shield up almost constantly, which is understandable. Placing the CDR on his ult only seems to add to his early game issues. Maybe he's not quite as CDR dependent with his new champion passive, but that's something I won't know until I play him.

IGE: I currently pick Ryze vs AD laners and take Flash/Teleport. I rush Tear -> Glacier Shroud > finish FH asap. This gives me 30% CDR at level 9 and ruins any chance for them to kill me alone. In his new design it's almost impractical to build CDR items. If you forego building CDR your build path basically locks into Tear -> Catalyst -> RoA. Not a bad build path but it leaves you vulnerable to a lot of different champions, mainly of the assassin nature although certain sustaining tanks can also cause you problems. And let's not forget to mention that you don't achieve 30% CDR until level 16 unless you go completely off course with your build path, delaying your strength even longer. You can always take 10% CDR from masteries or your runes at the expense of other stats in order to alleviate that issue, but then your still in the same boat: more CDR then you need if you want to build like a tank.

  • The other way to look at it is i can have 30% CDR at level 6 if I finish FH at that point (highly unlikely). What is more likely is having 40% CDR at level 11 with a completed frozen heart and my current preferred runes/masteries. Although, the additional 10% CDR at level 16 is wasted.

All in all he seems to play about the same. You'll need to be good at managing your passive to remain effective in lane but team fights should feel similar. Skill shots are nothing new at this point, and it should give them more room to increase his power if he's having issues. At the end of the day it's not a bad thing to have all the extra CDR, its just not ideal. I'm not sure what they would replace the CDR with anyways.

actually this is my ipression:

  • passive: the changes are ok, you need to charge it before trade, and it's cool. I like this change!
  • overload: the spell that you actually use for poke, it will become a skillshot that will stop at the first minion. This is first big problem. How can you poke someone if you're spell will stop at the first minion?! Not enough, it will do less damage.
  • cage: less damage, longer cooldown, and the snare is shorter, i have to comment?
  • spell flux: less damage, less magic resist reduction (12% is a lot less than 24 on adc and apc)
  • this ulti will remain nearly the same, apart for 30 % cooldown. So now it will become useless to buy a frozen harts for the mana, armor and CD.

riot compleated destroyed his kit, nerfed all his spell and more than that, now it will become a classic mage like everyone else. one skillshot, one light cc, some aoe damage, and no more tank. if someone think that i'm wrong, please can you explain what he thinks about this rework? i'm seeing 4 post for days about how bad are now veigar and how bad it will become ryze.

I dislike the skill shot ideals we are heading.

We have so many champions now with mobility that point and clicks are the way to go. Yes! it lacks so called skill, but when a skill shot is tailing someones butt and doesn't hit since they are so fast it gets pretty annoying when your championing isn't as mobile.

I do play skill shot champions and point and click champions. Each one has there usage.

Why fix that isn't broken.

item 3025 instead of item 3110 :

"+" More mana and some AP = More damage, more shield "-"Less Armor

"+" Passive Sheen effect helps during the window your passive is down with kiting - not spamming spells as much anymore actually allows you to auto-attack "-" Lose the anti-AS aura

What I don't get is, why does it MATTER if you go over the CDR cap in your build? item 3110 You want the armor, you want the mana, and you want the aura. At level 16, the CDR becomes superfluous. Do you suddenly NOT want the other stats because it goes over CDR? That's ridiculous.

I don't mind the Q becoming a skillshot, but that passive sounds awful to my ears. In a teamfight, Ryze will need to cast 5 spells before reaching his maximum potential. What about early teamfights, where you don't have all your spells? No offense, but for a mono target mage, that sounds strange.

Also to gain his 12 seconds stacks, he needs to cast a spell, so we're going to see Ryze throwing random skillshots everywhere before a teamfight, hoping to have enough stacks, but not too much, before entering the teamfight... Sounds like Annie but Annie doesn't have a time limit on her stacks (okay, Riot wants to get rid of that), and most importantly, Annie has a shield, her cone of fire doesn't have to be randomly cast all the time, her shield can give her the stacks, without stopping her.

And I'm not a big fan of the decreasing cdr ratio part of his passive, that makes the passive of his ult seem to hinder himself.

Time will tell, right now, I really don't like it. Ryze used to be very straightforward, easy to play with and against, and he his turning into the AP version of Gnar, except he still has the kit of a mono-target burst mage.

I think they undershot his damage ratio's as well, but i fully expect them to alter the final numbers. ADC's typically don't build MR so sorc boots usually allow enough MP to kill them off (with runes it leaves them with under 10 base MR?). I noted his potential early game struggles and the lack of early CDR seems to be an issue for many reasons. But Ryze nowadays isn't really the level 6 skirmisher type anyways. You teleport to drag or bot lane pop q/e and ult while its airborne and unload q-w-q on a carry then just kinda stand around and auto until your next q cycle.

As far as the Q spam it gives you the option to poke from a safe range prior to team fights, which can't be overlooked. Being able to capitalize on your passive will take Teamwork, but it looks to be more rewarding. The shield details aren't really out right now either.
