Stop Asking for Two Servers. Stop saying its not fair.
I'm tired hearing the West coast moan. _ "Why move the server!?", "HOW ABOUT TWO SERVERS?", "WoW has two servers"_
And you know what else WoW has? A monthly subscription rate.
Servers are not inexpensive. Especially these professional gaming servers. You would have to acquire mass professional hardware, lease space in two different states, maintain servers and hire staff for two places more than half way across the company, and don't even get started on legal costs. Its not feasible... or necessary. I understand the people who say they spike to 250, but there is nothing wrong with 90 ping. Heck, thats pretty much better than what many have been dealing with for 4 years across the world. Heck, your brains reaction time runs at about 300 ping, if you are talking milliseconds.
Its really expensive and not feasible. But Riot has an expanded player base they need to accomodate, so what could they do instead?
Move the servers to accomodate the most players possible.
Which they did. Successfully.
"Why didn't they pick a central location like Denver"
Central by geography is not the target. Central by player density is.
Chicago was honestly probably one of the best choices they could have made. Thats why their educated and professional team made that decision. Yeah. If you are in Hawaii or Alaska, that sucks. But I have got news. You are an extreme minority of players. It doesn't make sense to cater from you and even you guys should understand that. It was a purely mathematical decision.
Riot improved the performances I bet for 70% of players, hurt it for 2%, and honestly made no difference to the rest. I'm not counting as going from 35 ping to 90 ping in California as a bad change. I bet you all my RP you wouldn't have been able to tell the difference if you weren't told what it was.
Thank you Riot for your educated, mathematical and strategic decision to increase the gameplay for the majority of your player base. You will always have people who cry, but I commend your efforts to make our experiences better for the masses.
We love you Rito.
