How can I not suck at League?

Introduction Hello, my name is SuperGeon and I have been playing League since closed beta, and I remember buying the physical game at GameStop. This is my favorite game to play in order to relieve stress and have fun. I often play with my little brother, whom I got hooked on this game and he quickly surpassed me. I prefer to play tanky champs like Taric, Galio & Rammus, and recently I have begun to branch out into less binary champs that occupy different roles (ADC, APC, Mage Support).

Problem Defined Overall, I'm not very good at this game. I understand many, if not all of the finer points of the game, but I fail to deliver on most fronts, leaving me open to a thorough trouncing. During my last game, I was TF mid facing off against Jhin, regardless of what I did I felt powerless to kill him. After Jhin made short work of me, regardless of my safe play, my jungler would come in and make short work of him. I feel that at times, I overthink a situation which causes me to play passively to the point of falling behind, and at other times I play too aggressively which works to the advantage of the enemy as well.

Cry For Help I have been playing this game for a long time, and I want to get better. What are a few things that I can do going forward to improve my game?

  1. Playing too safe will kill you

  2. Playing too aggro will kill you

  3. Ward, if you dont have vision dont go there

  4. Farm up and outscale

  5. Dont give up cs for a kill. If you have 10 cs at your tower its not worth it to walk up and kill the 300 hp jhin unless you know for a fact you can kill him.

  6. If you dont have vision dont go there

  7. If you dont have vision dont go there

  8. Ward up

  9. If you dont have vision do not fucking go there

  10. if it seems like a bad idea it probably is

  11. If the adc shows bot go get baron

  12. If your team needs a tank pick a tank. If your team needs damage pick damage

  13. If you dont have vision do not fucking go there.

  14. Bann jhin,gangplank and hecarim.

To be fair Jhin trounces almost everyone right now. In general, continually playing and practicing helps. Watching/reading guides and/or pro players talking/playing can help too, to see what they do differently. Learning to CS is extremely important, to a point you can usually get almost every single one. Sticking to two roles max and maybe 2 champs max per role is the best so you can focus. Preferably 1 role with 2 (main/secondary) champs. Staying in 1 role will help you learn that specific role better and sticking to only a few champs will help you master them better. Stick to easy champs until you learn game mechanics and how everything else works. If you play a difficult champ, you will need to focus on playing them as well as the game.

I would suggest practicing in custom games for jungle routes and last hitting minions. Watching guides on animation cancelling. Watching some pro streamers. Try reading guides for the champions you like to play, not one, several. Also try out a variety of champions and roles so you better understand them when you play with or against them.

Then pick a main champion: I main Ashe. And some secondary champions: Riven, Leona, Shyvana and Teemo for me. That you want to be good at. Practice them a lot, learn their specific mechanics well. And make them your primaries. Still doddle around in other champions from time to time, to keep your perspective fresh.

Always read patch notes. And try to keep up to date on the current meta.

To see who is currently good and bad in the meta, and who is being picked or banned. Go to Champion.gg

Start to analyze how you play. Think about your patterns for dodging skillshots. Is it erratic enough to not easily be predicted? Think about how your enemy dodges skill shots and how they react to your actions. Can you predict their patterns and strategies?

Ping everything. Missing enemy? Ping it. See enemy jungle near your lane headed towards a lane? Ping it. See an enemy use a long CD summoner spell or ultimate? Say "Blitz Flash" - "Ashe ult" etc. In chat.

Work with your team, not against them. If they need you, come to them, if things are sparse, farm, push.

WARD! Regardless of what lane you play, or role. Ward, key points. On cooldown if possible. Always pump out all the wards you can. Even a few pinks.

Try to keep a good eye on your enemies and allies build, and damage composition. Counter enemy items and champions by your strategies and build, while complimenting what your team needs. Your build should never be static or preplanned. It should be proactive and reactive.

Take more risks and play hard champions. Even if you look bad at first, laugh it off and have fun. You will learn what works, what doesn't, and earn more courage.

Do not be afraid to admit you CANNOT win. When I am Riven against Illaoi, I just straight up know I am not winning that lane. Unless Illaoi is a potato. So I focus on farming safely, teleport ganks and scaling okay into late game. Doing my best to deny her kills and not let her catch my team off guard. I am not going to dive an enemy with a gold, mechanical, skill or design advantage over and over in some sort of furious 'bravery' that is foolishness. Don't be afraid to play it safe and play catch up.

DON'T fear the meta. You can break it, but breaking it isn't some noble deed. The meta exists because it is general what is effective, right here, right now. Following it can be a path for success until you have the skills to come up with occasional off meta plays of your own.

Most importantly, don't let people get you down. Play your best, have fun, ignore toxic comments. People don't really get "200 farm by 20 minutes" nor is everyone really going "20/1/20" every game. I've watched pros like doublelift and high tier streamers like boxbox feed their butts off and be pushed out of dozens of CS. Do your best, enjoy the game, it's a game.

See you on the rift!

I feel that at times, I overthink a situation which causes me to play passively to the point of falling behind, and at other times I play too aggressively which works to the advantage of the enemy as well.

This is due to an incomplete understanding of a champions strengths and weaknesses and how they can potentially interact in the variety of situations that you can get into.

The easiest way to learn the game is to master 1 champion. That way you can focus on learning the game, and not the game AND your champion.
