Anyone else think elder dragon is just a noob trap?

I see where elder dragon can be useful, particularly if your team has had many previous elementals. Still, it seems like it is far more likely to cost an engaging team the game rather than to help them win it. While it does significantly less damage, it is far tankier than baron late game (+69 armor +43 mr, 50hp regen/sec)

I'm going to put aside the fact that repeated secures give no permanent buff (just sort of being SOL if you didn't get the early dragons, reinforcing the s6 snowballing arcade meta). While I think this is a bad design choice, I think it belongs on a different thread. Also, I do see the intended use of unique objectives that cannot be made up for late game.

I am just talking about the high risk/low reward tendency of elder dragon. A common strategy that I see at the moment is, when on even ground with the enemy team, to simply ward it and wait for them to fall for the trap. Aside from its ability to chase (easier resets), it is simply a wall that provides no mobility buff after being secured. This means that the securing team has to dedicate more time to the objective, have no enhanced recall for a quick escape, and will likely provide a small buff in return (unless your team had a lot of elements early). The only time I ever really see it being taken properly is when it is taken by a contesting team or when a team is so far ahead they can just casually take it for extra security/bait.

Please let me know your thoughts in the comments. Maybe I am just missing something.

I have to agree. I'm ashamed to say that as a jungler, I've been involved in more Elder Dragon throws than Baron throws recently. I have finally realized that the enemy team getting Elder Dragon actually doesn't matter as much as I think it does because you always have the option of not fighting them and just waveclearing.

However, you do NOT have the option of not fighting a team with Baron since even a support with a wave can take inhib towers with the minion buff.

Right now, after learning the game more, I realize that Elder Dragon should not be started by teams that are behind. Even if you secure it, you'll likely have minimal benefit and the true damage burn won't be worth potentially losing 2-3 members of your team since you are stuck in the dragon pit with no way to fast recall. It won't even help you defend. Your only choice with Elder Dragon would be to use the buff to secure an ace or snowballing pick, NOTHING else. That's highly risky because the enemy team could be so far ahead, Elder doesn't matter. Baron, on the other hand, allows you to defend without ever engaging the enemy and is a safer way to get back in the game.

I think you're forgetting the fact that Elder Dragon still retains the buff from the old 5th Dragon buff. Now you don't need 4 dragons prior to the 5th to obtain the true damage buff you just simply need to kill it and now you have a 5 man red buff. Which is HUGE btw. It lets ADCs focus front line if that's the only target they can reach. It burns structures which lets you push for game even faster with the earth dragon buff.

What I'm saying is, just because you're on the losing side does not mean you should give up on Baron or Elder Dragon. If you're already losing you can only go up. So take the risk and deter the team from taking it. Killing them at either Baron or Elder Dragon could cost them the game.

Sometimes its actually better to let the enemy team engage the Elder dragon, then you flank and keep them stuck in the Dragon pit while they fight you as well as constantly taking damage from the Elder dragon. Is it a noob trap? I'd say it all depends on your team's cooperation, skill level, and team composition as well as if the enemy team is in position to flank you or taking a stronger, more useful objective like an inhibitor.

Dragons in general are noob traps.

People go for them more often than they should

Only go for it when enemy jungler/carry are dead or the JUST backed and you know they arent around to steal it.

TOWERS>DRAGONS

The one thing is. Old dragon had a longer burn time on its damage. The buffs for the most part were worse until 5 stacks. Now at 5 stacks your buffs are already strong but get amped again and the burn is applied when you hit them with anything and it damages faster (i think the damage is about the same but a lower burn time).

The only thing I can see happening is lowering the HP of elder dragon by about 10% as it takes longer than Baron to kill.
