Champion select is so extremely different in LCS and Ranked, so make them different (5 bans)
One of the biggest strengths of LoL is, you can basically do exactly the same champ, rune/mastery setup, and build as Faker did in his last game, and even copy his whole team if you are five, and basically have exactly the same tools. This makes the "synergy between playing and watching" extremely good, and keeps many people interested in both. This is the reason why there are exact the same "rules" in competitive and casual LoL-gaming. You can really learn and be inspired by watching pro plays
However, champ select will always be completely different, mainly due to 2 things:
- They know their enemies really well, and can possibly target ban them. This is a very big reason why LCS can only have 3 bans, the target banning strategy would simply be far to oppressive. However, this will never ever happen in SoloQ
- They know their team strategies and strengths, and can ban counters. Thus can 2 more bans have a too high value
Furthermore, Riot has admitted to balance around LCS and high elo, leaving 90 % of the playerbase with possible "pubstompers" like
right now. You can basically never ban a lane counter because at least 2 bans must be used towards stupid champions - as Xerath, i would certainly like to ban Vi, as a good enemy Vi just will royally screw your day from lvl 2 until she kills the nexus. But with the current system, i don't think i have ever banned Vi. Having 5 bans would actually give me a tactical advantage from bans, rather than keeping Xin safely locked up.
LCS champ select and ranked champ select will never be anywhere near the same, and keeping the same rules doesn't make sense. When you are actually on the Rift, that's when we are feeling like the pros!
