Can Riot clarify once and for all whether supports need to buy support items like Sightstone?

Every second game I get Galio "support" building Rod of Ages or Lux "support" rushing Morellos.

They end up doing no damage because they're levels behind and offer no utility because they don't provide vision. I'm bloody sick of it.

**Riot: Answer once and for all whether this is acceptable if you are assigned the support position. **What's the point of imposing autofill if players who don't play their role properly face no consequences? I don't care that you ban some streamer who trolls in hundreds of games. I care about the guy who gets autofilled once, doesn't play support properly, then is autofilled protected. Why isn't that a punishable offence?

Don't dance around the question with phrases like "We don't want to enforce a particular meta".

Yes or No? Does support actually have to support by buying Sightstone at the very bare minimum?

No role is required to purchase any specific item.

I'd buy Sightstone on any Top lane tanks if I have to. Like why are players so stingy when it comes to spending on just a simple 800g Sightstone?

You don't have to in the sense that you don't have to ever move anything but your pawns while playing chess. It's not mandatory, but it is an incredibly horrible idea to not buy it as support. You're essentially throwing the game. A skilled enemy support will notice and easily deny your vision and call for vision free ganks durng the laning phase. And during the teamfight phase, you sacrifice a significant amount of vision control.

Is this wrong, though? What happens when Riot strictly defines what they want the meta to be like, but there are better tactics that exist outside of that? Do people get flagged for trolling because they did something that was actually more effective? And even if Riot's meta was consistent with the actual meta, does this mean that all off-meta strats, even if they're completely viable, are now suddenly considered trolling?

It's difficult for Riot to take hard stances on stuff like this because it's not so binary as "this is the right method" and "this is the wrong one".

Imo they should permaban anyone who refuses to buy at least a sightstone, but of course my opinion gets downvoted because everybody wants to go full damage when supporting, especially in trash elo and we all know that at least 70% of players are low elo trash...

I wish they would get rid of sightstone it's not fun in any way to play wimpy support for most people which is why so many autofilled support roles. Also it is OP in many ways to have so much vision as a team which means it is must buy which = even more boring

i always play with a friend botlane and they always buy a control ward on our first back if they got the money for it, so i can spend my money on support item upgrade+ ruby crystal. supports get less money so yea dont expect galios and lux's to actually "support" most of the time, but give supports who wanna try some help

Even if you have little yo no vision. During lane phase you should generally know the jungles pathing. The most likely start bot side and usually top side around the same time your jungler (depending on the jungler) reaches top. Then usually if they have not ganked already they will either gank or continue to farm.

Vision is great especially in higher Elo. But in Low Elo everyone is generally obvious and you should be able to stay safe even if you don't have a 'support'.

If your bot you should be at range anyway unless your using a bad adc like vayne.

Honestly, if my support doesn't want to buy it, then i will, EVEN if im the ADC.. at that point.. he wants to be the carry fine. We will lose the game because of it.
