How do I Rumble?

I've actually gotten intrigued by the idea of playing Rumble top, so I took him into normals to see how I'd do.

First game: Versus Aatrox, went 4/7, lost horribly. Second game: Versus Trundle, wound up feeding horribly, lost.

Okay, how do I Rumble? What do I build first? (been trying a Liandry's rush, but it's not working, soo....) What runes and Masteries do I take? Who do I watch out for in lane? Who does Rumble beat?

The two games, if it helps:

in most matchups the best build is sorc-boots->haunting guise->Zonias

playing him is very different to a lot of champs, so don´t expect instant-success...it really needs some practice. Generally you want to stay slightly overheated when trading for the extradmg, but you don´t want to silence yourself most of the times (though sometimes it´s great to boost your dmg via AAs in an all in). vs melees you mostly try to flamethrow-harass them down when they come lasthitting, while keeping your distance otherwise (don´t relay on flamespitter to lasthit, e and autoattacks are a lot more reliable). and if you get beaten in lane don´t take it too hard, Rumble still offers a lot of dmg in teamfights with just some magic-pen if you land a good equalizer.

Sometimes u can charge up your Q heading to lane and get a good lvl 1 jump on them. However, rumble is not known for being super strong in lane but rather scaling up for team fights. So dont force urself into bad trades. Also, a good build for rumble is this:item 3151 item 3020 item 3157 item 3116 item 3135 item 3089

rumble needs practice(csing, passive, ult) read guids it really helps when you know how to play him you will see how strong and fun he is people usually suck with him because they don't have enough knowledge of his kit items:item 3151 item 3089 item 3116 item 3135 item 3157 item 3020 (not in order)

While I lack the experience of someone that owns rumble, my experience while he was available on free week is that zhonya should be your first item

I played a shit ton of rumble and i still do occasionally, however, he is not as strong in the top lane after the mastery and item changes. He is still decent, but expect to fight an uphill battle. With that said try to get the heat bar 50% and try to keep it around there when you go into lane. Only overheat when you want to make extended trades and when you overheat you really want to use all 3 of your abilities starting with scrap shield. After around lvl 9, unless you hold a big lead you will start to fall off in the 1v1 department because other dueling top laners will start to outscale you.

^just some tips and basic info. Remember when you want to arrive in the top lane with a 50% heat bar to make the most of your abilities.

The thing about Rumble is that he's for team fights rather than duelling

If you lose lane, try roaming and helping your team engage with your ult or chasing down people with your slows

my understanding of rumble is that he is an "eco" top laner in that he doesn't need alot of gold to do what he does obviously being able to get that gold in lane will make a difference but rumble on one item does just a much work in a teamfight as the other top laner with 2 items. this is a little bit from his passive, which gives him some good steroids, and alot from his ult which can destroy if placed well in a teamfight.

i would say placing good ults, controlling your over heat in lane, and last hitting are the things that make a good good rumble player. in that order.

One important thing is manageing your heat. You want to stay at 50-60 heat so you get the 50% bonus damage/shield but can use your full kit before overheating. Rumble needs some time to get used to in terms of CSing, you should try and practice that in customs a bit. Rumble has many bad machups, trundle beeing one of the worst and Aatrox also beeing not easy. Vs AAtrox, you should start with cloth+5 and play agresive early, stack up your heat by spaming Q befor minions arive and roast him when ever it is possible, which usually can give you enough health advantage to win an all-in at lvl 3(in an all in, always remember that your overheat-AAs deal massive damage. If overheated, you can nearly match AAtrox's aa dps early on) If you notice that the matchup goes bad or your not confident to play agresive early on, get an early second point into E and try to farm from rang with it. It's no big issue if you fall behind in cs, rumbel scales well with xp and needs little gold to be effective. Also, keep in mind that rumble is no champ you pick to win lane, his power is in teamfights. At lvl 6, trust in the power of your ult. It delas massive damage. If Aatrox engages on you with Q, just lay down the ult, starting slightly behind him and going towards your escape path(if you have trouble aiming it fast, practice it in a custom). Hit him wiht E and use W to get out of his range, as soon as he stops chaseing and turnd around, use your Q and chase him. If he didn't have a lead, he should not be able to win that all-in. Also, the ult+q is powerfull vs ganks, especially squishy junglers like shaco can die suprisingly fast in the aoe, and if your jungler is nearby, he should have an easy time cleaning up as you should get both of them rather low.

For runes, magicpen marks and ap-quints are core, though hybrid pen does the job aswell i guess. Armor yellows are ok if you have trouble pre 6, else scaleing armor or health is better. For glyphs, scaleing mor is ok, though flat magicpen or scaleing cdr are also viable options.

For masteries: vs squishy opponents, going for flatpen+thunderlords combined with the opressor from ferocity gives alot damage. vs more tanky oponents, going for deathfire touch is the way to go. If you are worried about getting killed early, go for the 12points in resolve, else go more agressive.

For items, getting hauntinguise and sorccboots asap is important, you want the pen to boost the huge base damage of your ult, and they are rather cheap for what they give. after that, either Abysal or Zhonya's, depending on your matchup. If you have trouble survivng in lane, throw in a defensive item like clotharmor or nullmage mantel. spellvamp isn't really a great purchase, especially early on. most of his damage is aoe, which doesn't work well with spellvamp, and it delays his important items to much. Liandrys also shouldn't be rushed, but rather be upgraded as 3ed item, as zhonyas and aditional pen are more valuable. The most important item to get atleast as 3ed item is zhonya's, as your flamespiter goes on duering the active, and it can help you to buy some time duering overheat. Abysal is only need if you need magiresist or face squoshy opponents that won't get to much mr, else voidstaff is a better choice. And don't get Rylais, the slow is kinda wasted as E+ult already slow, and slows don't stack anymore. Depending on your setup and how the game goes, it certainly is no mistake to go tanky after the pen+zhonya's, though his damage potential with items like ludens and rabadons is massive.

Runes : Magic Pen reds , Armor yellows, CDR blues vs ad or tanks , MR blues vs ap and Ap quints Masteries : Sorcery, Double edge sword vs low damage opponents, Feast vs High damage, Natural talent vs low damage opponents, Vampirism vs high damage, oppressor , piercing thoughts and DeathFire Touch. Savagery , assassin , merciless and dangerous game. Builds : Boots 4 is what I usually start as Rumble, although it can be cloth 4. If I see my lane going poorly , I rush Hourglass , since I would have to buy it at some point, and it helps stay alive, at least for a bit longer. If I am doing well, Liandry's it the best option. Void staff is a must have, as is Rabadons, and Rylais helps amount your damage. If against a Ap , rushing Abyssal, if ahead or behind is viable, since it gives you resistance + very good damage (the removal of MR is underrated, especially as Rumble ) . I saw you try to buy, Gunblade I believe, in game 1, and let me tell you, it's not good. He would much rather the magic pen then a Gunblade, even if he autos a lot. Lanes to avoid: Unfortunately, most lanes are poor match ups currently. Bruisers were already a counter to Rumble, and they got buffed in the preseason, so Rumble is kinda in a bad spot right now. Fiora, GP, Irelia, Mundo ,Garen , Darius, Jax, Wukong, Rengar, Olaf, Garen , Tryndamere, Ekko, Jarven, Swain , Trundle and Riven should all be avoided. Lanes to pick into: Rumble is good against targets that have no CC (Fiora and GP are the exceptions) since that means that the lane will have straight out duels, and Rumble outputs massive damage. Illaioi , Teemo, Mord and Poppy are good lanes for Rumble. He does fairly well against most tanks (Just , avoid Mundo, please) since he can outdamage them + he builds Liandry's , that counters their health stacking. And a Final note is that he fairs well against most Ap champions, since he can afford to rush Abyssal, and proceed to take over. Lissandra is a great lane opponent for Rumble, despite her CC overload.

Suggestions : Your passive does not trigger against towers (The more damage on auto while silenced), so spamming spells will not help you take down the turret faster, and can leave you exposed to jungle pressure. Your passive does not boost your ultimate's damage, I've seen so many Rumbles use their spells , almost overheat and then ulti, thinking that it will do more damage, but it's basic spells only. Speaking of your ulti, I recommend that you remove smart cast if you have it on. Landing a good ulti is already hard, but using smart cast makes it even harder. A neat trick that evolves your ulti and a Hourglass. As you may know, Rumble does not have any escapes, so while dueling or being ganked, lay your ultimate on you and activate the hourglass. If they are melee, they probably will take a huge chunk of damage, that will hopefully prevent them from reengaging.

In the jungle!

Rumble is an early game beast, so taking advantage of his early level trades is pretty much the only way to carry as Rumble. At level 3, a good trade combo would be: W-E-Q-E. Don't be afraid to AA when you're overheated, as the damage is deceptively high. And finally, use your hot coal walkway (ult) to pick off stragglers in the direction they're running. Happy Rumbling!
