Is there such a thing as a "carry support"?
Also, is it okay i a support takes occasional kills so long as they put the gold towards important items like redemption and such?

There is such a thing as a carry support, but not by your definition. Carry supports are generally play making supports. Personally, I go, if needing ap,

. If we don't, I go on my main 2 (

). If my adc is incompentent (fill/never adc in their life) then I will take kills because it's worth more on my helping the rest of the team. However, if they know how to aa, fight 2v2 at the least, then I try to give them the kill.
(Although I'm pretty low elo, I basically carry most of my games on by feeding my adc unless I got people running it down.)

The way I see it is if you're saving spells specifically to steal kills, it's a problem.
If you're so steadfast in not taking kills you give up freebies, it's a problem.
Just go at it and if you take the kills oh well. It's a lot better that they die and the support gets the kill than them getting away and nobody getting it.
Also, supports carry through roaming and playmaking for their team. In a sense even the lowest damage supports can carry by being a strong initiator or disabler. The least carry potential though would probably be Soraka since her disable isn't great, most of her kit relies on having someone to heal, and she's not much of an initiator either.
Of course theres such a thing as a carry support; its called support. Who do you think is spoon feeding your tyler 1 wanna be run it down mid inting bronze 15 ADC all those kills and farm, while simultaneously warding as far around the map and securing kills for the rest of the team, dragging them all to the nexus kicking and screaming?
I support often, and in my experience, here's some rules I live by:
Everyone's mad about a KS, but a dropped kill can change the game. Taking a kill is fine if it's truely close, taking CS without a Relic charge is impermissible. I wouldn't even hit the minions if I were you. CS is a better source of income with lower risk, and an assist is better than nothing at all. If people bitch, mute them.
The gold item is non-negotiable. Everything else is discretionary. If I'm on a mage, I try to get Twin Shadows; If I'm on a tank, I try to get Portal. Nuke if you must, but that doesn't mean you can't help the team.
The support should be roaming and shot calling. The position itself requires thinking 3 steps ahead and anticipating risk mitigation strats. You need to baby sit. Ping for other lanes, look for MIAs, and don't be afraid to make up bullshit stats to get what you want. I routinely say, if I see the jungle top lane, "You should get Herald, it has an 85% win rate for teams that get him."
Rush to get the tower down because once it's gone, you're not attached to the ADC, you should be attached to the carry champ. Garen top leave the lane 3/0? Unless he's just farming the jungle, get him fed. If the Orianna got a couple lucky kills, who cares, make her look like a smurf.
The goal for support is something like an investment firm. There are 4 companies ahead of you; one of them is the next Google and one is Pets.com. Your goal is to ID them both as fast as possible, and don't be shy about doing it. Let everyone know where you're investing and tell them they can come along for the ride if they want to win.
Actual supports that can carry alone completely alone based on my experience as a support main.
: pretty good damage, an ultimate you can’t ignore/mitigate/dodge, and increadibke roaming for kills or vision control.
: Saves teammates near immediately, can outduel a LOT of champions (despite building Support tank), bear instant rotations.
: walks the line between mid laner and support when ahead or Meta.
: The most powerful hook in the game, while not being TOO team reliant on follow up like thresh.
Then there are the “Supports”
Brand zyra lux are basically carries
maybe, pyke when getting kills w/ his ult b/c of gold share (plus w/ ult resets he really can carry a teamfight)
Supports have the ability to greatly influence how games turn out. Although your ability to influence games is now much lower than what it was before you can still do it. Depending on your play style and how well you play you can sway the game into your teams favor alone.
I like sona because the q poke and the auras are very helpful for both as a team and when I am solo. as sona if I get some early kills/assists and get lichbane early I can easily carry. Once had a game when I was super ahead, enemy vi tried to walk up for a gank after we killed their adc. I already had sheen so I did a simple q AA combo and dealt a ton of damage to her, she started running away and I ran after her, I ended up killing her in river with my q active lol.
On any supp I generally don’t upgrade my supp item to the final form, usually I leave it at the base component and focus on my first item or my boots. Saves a lot of money and I can get my powerspike item earlier.
Rule of thumb is to try and never take kills from your adc, unless you are playing pyke and ulting for the kill. and yes some supports can carry,
Just a PSA that damage isn't the only way to carry a game. Every support is a "carry support" it just depends on the player
I will ks my ADC if they are feeding, tilting, playing at melee range and are about to get a kill. Otherwise, my 0/12 draven will be worth gold again.
