IMPORTANT In Regards to Urgot Champion Update, An Informed Opinion on the Matter (Riot Please Read)
Hello, I would like to begin by saying that I have played Urgot for a very long time and have tried just about anything on this champion. The reason I am writing this guide is because I like this character above any other in League of Legends and I would hate for him to be ruined, therefore I choose to write about it as to share my thoughts and try and make an impact before it is too late. I completely understand if you choose to pursue the champion in your own way but I would like you to hear me out first at least. Now enough of the rambling let's get to details.
Urgot I believe is a hugely misunderstood champion, both when it comes to mechanics, and also when it comes to knowledge based decisions. To elaborate, he is most commonly built as a damage dealer with very few defence items (more on that later). Most players are either unable or unaware of how to utilise his ultimate properly in team fights and disregard it as a useless ability on the wrong champion. To explain, this is because they have no defence stats to keep him alive after he uses it. However, there is a way to use it and the simple answer of achieving it is to build Urgot as a bruiser not a damage dealer. He fits that role perfectly both thematically and game play wise, and on top of that he is literally the only champion out of the entire roster to be a ranged bruiser, whose 'whole kit' primarily focuses on attacking from great range. Whilst Gnar also occupies the spot of a bruiser his main part of the kit is focused on utilising the mega Gnar and his strength doesn't lie in his ranged attacks in team fights.
I believe that this is heavily relevant to his rework because he never got the proper chance to be good as people opted out of playing him to begin with or rather gave up after their first game and in ignorance said that he has a broken kit. Very few decided to learn the champion and discovered many ways in which he can be played. I want to expand a little on the bruiser build path; Urgot lacks any sort of auto attack empowerment or benefit really from his kit as a result choosing to auto attack will mean that you are going to be closer to the enemy for very little benefit. Furthermore, neither his Q or E being the only damaging spells have a 100% scaling on his AD, meaning that building full AD will not net him as much damage as it would on a typical marksman. This as a result makes armor penetration or in other words lethality a lot more potent of an option on him, and allows him to achieve the ability to either kill squishies faster or help shred armor on tanks in order for your whole team to burst them down; this also means synergy with just about any AD damage dealer in the game. Now if you supplement that armor penetration with some tanky items you suddenly have a character that remains to do damage whilst becoming hard to kill. He becomes that character that you do not want to face alone, which suits him very well not only game play wise but also thematically in my opinion.
Now to go on to his ultimate, which will most likely be the most controversial part of this post. I do realise that it is difficult to go back on a rework or previous statements especially once you have become invested or committed to making a change, but hear me out on this one. I personally believe his ultimate is the most fun part of his kit. I think that because it is a very healthy ability in general as it offers clear counter play for the enemy, putting Urgot in his most vulnerable state even going as far as to allow the enemy to cancel the channel to stop the switch from occurring at all through cc. With his bruiser build if he manages to complete the channel you suddenly have a bruiser right where he wants to be, in the enemy back line spreading terror if unstopped. I think that not only does it fit him thematically but it is also very fun to play with, and fits him well game play wise.
Moving on I just wanted to touch upon his Q and E or rather the combo from those two abilities. Landing 1 skill just to be able to constantly harass the enemy can be frustrating for the opposition I will agree. I will also a accept that in order to do damage with him it is required to land his E and offers him very little options if the ability is missed. However, I would also like to highlight that it makes him a champion that simply can't be instantly picked up in every match. He is a lot more potent against immobile targets and I expect him to be in and out of meta frequently as a result of that (with exceptions on a match to match basis). But I do not think that makes him a bad champion, rather I think it makes his kit have clear advantages and disadvantages that are healthy for the game.
Final notes to summarise, I believe that Urgot's kit suits him very well thematically and is fun to play with both for him and the enemy with clear strengths and weaknesses. I do not think his ultimate requires a major change, or his E and Q for that matter. A small change here and there to give more options for Urgot if he does miss his E however would be quite a nice change. It would help improve the game play for both him self and the enemy going against him.
Also a small comment about his W. I think it only really offers him the ability to trade better in lane, which I think would be better if changed to offer him more utility or alternatively more means of doing damage if he misses his E. I think that would help strengthen his kit and make him a more solid and fun to play champion. I hope this has helped allow you to make an informed decision or at least get another outlook on the issues with his rework. Thanks for taking your time to read.
Recommended example build: Manamune, Mercury's Treads, The Black Cleaver, Frozen Heart, Edge of Night, Guardian Angel
Note: I have a whole guide written out on mobafire in regards to this champion that is currently the top guide present on the site. If you are interested on his bruiser play style in more detail you may find some of the information present there beneficial (the matchup section is a little out dated however).
