The Balance Team Does Not "Balance the Game Without Even Playing It"

I figured I'd try to finally put this to rest, because it's a really damaging misconception that leads to distrust and dismissal rather than helpful discussions.

First off, every single Rioter is encouraged to participate in Riot's internal playtests. These playtests happen every day, several times a day, because the designers need to try out a lot of different approaches when coming up with balance changes, champion tweaks, and new content. And I'm pretty sure that every one in the game-design department is basically required to participate. Seriously, playtesting is like game-design 101.

Second, the is a dedicated Playtest Team, filled with Master-Challenger players. I think they are well-known by now, but it's worth reiterating. They have some of the best players in the game, able to pick-up new champions/changes and push those design to their limits, in as short a time as is humanly possible. On top of that, they are trained to proficient in giving feedback: identifying problems, describing them in detail without any fluff or redundancy, and being aware of potential biases or gaps in understanding.

Third and most importantly, the designers themselves are regular players like the rest of us. It's basically a requirement to work at Riot that you have to be "passionate" about the game and it's players. So yes, they play the live game just as much as any other working adult. They experience the same frustrations and annoying trends as we do. They know what it's like to have their favorite champions fall in and out of meta. They share our struggles trying to grind to Gold/Diamond/etc. And regarding their skill-levels, suffice it to say that they have players of all ranks, and that it doesn't matter all that much in the first place since they have such a skilled playtest team and tons of data from all ELOs.

If you read all the way through, thanks for listening. Double thanks if you leave some civil discussion in the comments.

Edit: I forgot to say, none of this means you can't or shouldn't hold Riot accountable for terrible decisions. They are still fallible; everyone makes mistakes. (I miss old Aatrox.) Just don't blame it on them not playing the game, because that's just not true.

Edit 2: It's been pointed out that some of the Playtest Team are Plat or Diamond. Indeed, I forgot that Diamond players with good feedback skills are also welcome within the Team. As for the Plats, I believe some of them have neglected their solo queue rank after they joined the team, but they could get Diamond if they wanted, I swear. [citation required]

I think the big question people often have is how often the playtest team misses big mistakes. I know they're human but sometimes there's a question about how <XYZ> made it to live.

Also, considering you seem to know more about this than I: What's the challenger/master spread of players like? 2 of every role? A lot of one and a little of others? etc.

I always assumed they had something like the "Future Future League" that exists for M:tG, but more in-house. I can easily imagine a private server where they test crazy ideas and new technology.

I think it's also important to remember that, while balance can sometimes be expressed in simple numbers (win percentages, pick rates, etc.), how you get to balance and what balance should look like is really subjective. Some people want a really tactical games. Others want short games with very crisp fights.

And here's 3 counter examples. Yes, Ricklessabandon literally hasn't played the game in four years and was balancing the game.

I dont think anyone actually seriously means this when they say it, they're just implying that the balance team is unknowledgeable about their job.

I dont know why they don't just say that instead of such a dumb statement, but i think that's the general idea.

Ok, sorry to burst your bubble but their playtest team is primarily made up of low Plat-mid Diamond players. There are only a few Master-Challenger playtesters.....

Even if the designers and balance team do play the game it doesn't change the fact that their changes over the past few seasons have been absolutely atrocious.

nidalee is a champion that is always going to be strong in pro play when viable, because is EXTREMELY reliant on her team, sure if you are amazing at nidalee you can land really good spears.. but for an example

one of my friends mains Malzahar mid lane.

as son as he hits 6 he says "ulti is up"

and there are maybe about 5 champion in the game that can survive a gank from me when he ulties and i am there.

becuase the spear CANNOT miss and they cant buy item 3140 fast enough by the time he is 6.

any champion that can reliable set up a hard CC on a enemy champion will make nidalee's ganking absurdly easy.. but that requires teamwork.

and more important it normally required voice chat...

for nidalee to be balanced in solo que.. she is GOING to be very strong in pro play.. there IS no way around it, not as long as she remains a jungler

nidalee has zero form of cc in her kit, and even buying items like item 3116 the slow does not help her land any spears.. she NEEDS her teammates, unless u have complete mastery of said champsion.

no other assasin in the game need this as much nidalee does
