#But instead we have TFT.

Jk jk.

From my understanding after reading Riot's Nexus article on the state of game modes, the idea of an RGM is something that is grandiose in comparison to SR or TT. Meaning, that it needs to features completely out of scope of average day-to-day gameplay.

Any game mode that Riot has pushed out have been game modes that have had interesting game mechanics you wouldn't normally fine in standard SR:

  • Unique / specific maps for the RGM to exist in (PROJECT: Overcharge, SG, Ascension, Space Odyssey)
  • Unique features that likely costs extra programming (Doom Bots, Blood Moon, Dark Star, Black Market Brawlers, Hexakill / One for All)

I believe, that a game mode can be simple and fun without too much effort from the game developers.

URF is actually the only outstanding game mode that Riot has made. The only feature it required was the URF Buff. Whereas game modes listed in the second bullet point all required something completely auxiliary to function, like objectives/quests, custom minions, custom items.

What I'm trying to get at is that an RGM can be as fun and simple as breaking the limits of existing barriers in standard game play or even introducing more limits like ARAM.

There are custom lobbies filled with some creative players that take action to make their own game modes. Riot could use it as a driving force behind RGMs. After all, that's how ARAM came to be.
