What's the difference between a SNARE and a ROOT?

Don't tell me it's the same thing because according the PBE changes for Singed:

Singed •Fling (E) and Mega Adhesive (W) now both note a target flinged into Mega Adhesive is ROOTED instead of SNARED.

They imply difference between the two.

Someone, somewhere, back in the mmorpg era messed up and mixed the terms "Snare" - ala rabbit or wolf trap up with the term for being "kinda slowed" ever since, the term has been messed up.

Roots, on the other hand, have always been clear (you aren't moving) - thus Snare became an amibigious term, while rooted became the agreed upon term.

Sorry to disappoint, but there actually isn't a difference. That's just a tooltip change for one of two reasons:

  1. Riot's trying to standardize CC names so you don't have "root" and "snare" being the same with different names.
  2. "Root" makes more sense thematically because glue doesn't actively hold you down, you're just stuck (which would explain the Zyra "snare" of her E, assuming they don't change that to standardize movement impediments)

The only functionally different hard CC that don't move your character model are "root", "stun", and "entangle". Roots stop movement (and movement abilities) but don't stop ability casts or autoattacks. Stuns stop movement, all ability casts, and autoattacks except for special cases like Karma's Mantra or Heimer's Upgrade. Entangle stops movement (and movement abilitys) and autoattacks, but not ability casts or channels. Entangle is only used for Amumu's Ult.

What's wrong here is that Maokai's W is not a ROOT!

The difference is, uhhh, about 5 letters.

I think the definition of "snare" isn't agreed upon so they changed it.

A little known fact: Amumu's ult does not stun.

Amumu's ult is actually a root. It interrputs channeled abilities like Katarina's Death Lotus and Miss Fortune's Bullet Time, and it reduces auto attack speed by 100%, thus preventing auto attacks. However, champions are able to cast abilities while caught in Curse of the Sad Mummy. In fact, Amumu's ult is the definition of a root.

Compare Curse of the Sad Mummy to Dark Binding (Morgana), Light Binding (Lux), or Rune Prison (Ryze). While caught in these abilities, champions can still auto attack.

A "root" is delayed because the environment is morphed, a "snare" is instantly because it is summoned from the character e.g. Ryze, Lux, Morgana.Karma
