How to defend against Tahm Ketch.

Hi everyone,

So I'm a Darius main, Ive really taken my play up a notch, got 2 pentakills this week, I've got my champ down and my match ups down. HOWEVER, any meele champ I've ever played, Riven, Garen, Nasus, Tryndamere. They have all suffered the same date against Tahm. A keyboard snapping screen slamming defeat. I don't understand this champ and I don't own him. I understand how he works 3 stacks and say goodnight. However, do I build armor, ap, or health? Doesn't he break all forms of defense, so is it just health? How do I evenly tank Tahm. I out macro these players, I contol the waves, I out CS them, I Dodge as much as possible, but what can I build to slow him down since he heals off minions, how do I build some form of sustain against him?

Rush a item 3156

The % Damage is Magic damage, and when low HP, Maw gives life steal/spell vamp.

If you try rushing a BC, you will end up dead 3 times before you finish it.

Freeze under your tower. Your Q has enough range to clean frontline minions and backline minions while not dealing dmg to the other. If he does not get ahead early on, he will be way less effective mid and late game.

Flame and BM them. Laugh at and mock their incompetence and desperation for picking Tahm top.

You may not have won the game, but you have won the day. And you get to have the last laugh, before you're chat restricted.

flame yourself for not banning Tahm.

Forget I said anything about MR. It don't work.

Ban or pick him. That's the deal now.

Instead of asking questions, have you considering researching what his kit actually does and try not being braindead? The wiki is an option if you need to view his kit. Dodging his Q or blocking it with minions is generally an easy way to win, but disengaging at the right time is truly the best way. If you cannot disengage, then you need to change your play style to account for what he can do. Tryndamere and Riven should have no trouble vs a Tahm unless you're facesmashing your keyboard. Both have the means to disengage before Tahm can proc the 3rd stack of his passive through their dashes/cc. A Nasus should not be fighting outside of his ultimate while the two juggernauts needs simply build MR and play correctly. Tahm Kench will win EVERY match up if the opposing player is braindead as a melee champion.

i think garen isnt overall bad of a pick into him.

i mean you still cant take trades with him, or fight him at all, but he has more tools to play passive and stay away from him than other melee champions.

Hilariously there is literally no melee champion in the game besides Olaf and Mundo that can fight him in lane

He mostly does magic damage, so mr keeps you healthy. Alot of his total damage is from his passive which procs on all his abillities and AAs, so item 3194 is rather effective. His W does a good bunch of %hp so stacking HP is not the best idea. He doesn't break any defense at all. He doesn't heal of minions, if he heals thats his E, which converts damage he takes into grey health, and then he can either use that for his shield or some of it regens back as health after a while.

Ive played darius into a tahm. Git 1v2ed and double killed them. If youre good enough you can beat him

Void Kaiju6/12/2019, 3:09:33 PM1 votes

I'm a Cho'Gath main and I find I can play vs him pretty well.

Max E, poke through the wave, watch for windows where you can land spells on him from behind the safety of your minions. Dorans Ring start into 2 more Dorans Rings for damage+mana sustain.

Early Merc Treads, if you get ahead at all rush a Liandry's Torment and watch him absolutely melt.

W max after E, the longer W silence lets you safely trade longer without fear of retaliation from his Q or W.

He can still kill you if he gets a good all in so your main goal is to try and avoid his Q as much as possible.

If he's getting low and it's looking like you can ult him, HOLD ON TO YOUR SILENCE. You don't want him to frame-perfect E your ult and make you waste it.

A couple things in your post are just incorrect. He does nearly entirely magic damage. You build MR. He doesn't invalidate defenses.

You don't "evenly tank" him. You want to do short, one-sided trades. He is amazing at long trades. If he can only get one or two autos off in a trade he will have a hard time winning even with passive HP regen.

He doesn't heal off of minions. He heals for a portion of the damage he takes.

If you're out-macroing him you should be fine anyway. Tahm scales like garbage, if he doesn't get fed and you're beating him in CS you will almost certainly be more of a threat.

If you want to sustain, Spirit Visage, or Blade of the Ruined King, or a QSS+a lifesteal item are all viable options given your champion pool.

Let's list all the reasons NOT to nerf Tahm Kench.

  1. Tahm is popular in Korea. Ahri

  2. You just need to learn to play against him.

  3. Tahm isn't even that good and has no presence in pro play (anymore, thanks rito). Zed

  4. Tham is a mechanically intensive champ with a high skill floor. Zed Riven

  5. We can't nerf Tahm because he's popular. Yasuo

  6. Git gud.

  7. ???

Ok, I have some suggestions for what to build and how to beat him. Tahm is definitely stronger against juggs like darius than he should be, and can often face tank beat a darius early on, but nonetheless, you should be able to beat him handily in trades after a certain point.

I usually go grasp for the easy procs against tahm and the fact that I just don't enjoy the heavily nerfed conqueror very much anymore. That being said, some think grasp is bad on darius, so it's really up to you.

I start by buying ruby crystal and a long sword on first back, since boots and a sword won't do a lot of good (though boots and hp might be good) and you probably won't have gotten lucky enough to have actually killed him by that time, so you probably won't have enough for phage.

By second back, I tend to finish phage and start building mr. It's paramount to build a spectre's cowl and at least get base boots at this point. It's NOT about getting more damage yet since A: you need cleaver over Tri in this matchup and you won't have enough gold to finish cleaver by next back, unless kench is bad and fed you a couple kills B: surviving longer in fights as well as sustain between fights/damage mitigation is more important that damage at this point.

Why? because kench has plenty of damage at this point, but easily out tanks you unless he plays terribly, and on top of it, he has means to dodge your second or third q (when you're low and it really matters) simply by eating you at that point, and also delaying your stacks. You will last longer and actually do more damage by going hp and mr early on after phage. Also, kench will likely land some Qs from a distance but be unable to force a fight, in which case the regen from spectres cowl is nice.

then after that, try to finish either cleaver or spirit visage. If you're winning trade just enough and if kench is a little overly aggressive, go cleaver. If you're losing trades, go visage. Also, if you determine to go merc treads (a good idea if they have an ap mid and someone like rammus jg, as in your scenario, and if their adc isn't massively fed), get them either just before or just after finishing spirit OR cleaver, but don't wait too long. because unless you decide to go tabi (in which case, hold off until after lane unless they have a high ad jg), you're gonna really want that extra tenacity and mr.

The way to play with this early game build is to be rather passive early on. Try not to push lane too much with Q, as we all know kench has plenty of cc to keep you in place for a gank, and if you are too close to tower, he can spit you under. Just stay behind your minions and use W to last hit as much as possible. Using Q to poke him early, which usually pushes the lane, isn't super beneficial since he is beefy as heck, and usually sustains pretty well. Instead, I like to farm and get grasp procs on kench when he goes to melee. You'll take some damage, but you should be able to survive trades until you get cleaver and/or visage, in which case you will start to win the face tanking fights. Of course, if he does fight you when you auto for grasp procs, by all means go ham on him, since you likely aren't going to run away without taking some decent damage. If you push the way a little because of that, just be sure to either shove it in hard to reset, or allow it to push back.

Obviously overall though, the key is stick behind your own minions. If you're not afraid of pushing the wave too much at certain points, by all means poke him with Q from behind minions. Essentially, kench is stronger early in a brainless smashing contest, but darius should never lose so badly that he can't escape when it turns bad if he has at least 75% hp at the start of the fight. If you're doing well and use this build, you should be smashing kench pretty easily by about level 8, and maybe even getting double kills if you stack up on kench quickly just before enemy jungle approaches.

magic resist.

if you're playing darius you just need to build damage

item 3071 item 3193item 3033

should work pretty well against him.

You are really going to have to play hit and run against him if you're planning on playing a melee champion against him. Darius, Garen, and Tryndamere (i'm only using the characters you listed) are your best bet against him.

My general tips:

Best tip: Play a ranged top laner. There's actually quite a selection against TK (ex: Vanye/Jayce/Kennen/Quinn)

  1. Short trades in the early game are your best bets. Can't get the speed boost or the nom if he can't get stacks
  2. Since most will bring Shield Bash and not demolish don't be afraid to back to base if you are low he shouldn't be able to push too hard.
  3. Mind his health his Grey Health/Shield Bash + Last Stand combo it's strong burst and his nom will easily finish you. If you all in TK many TK's will take a lot of Damage in hopes to turn the fight and will go all in in return try to keep moving making it hard to get stacks or nom'd once his grey helath shield Poofs go for the finish.
  4. Fight in a minion wave it'll be harder to hit his Q making him rely on autos to gets stacks on you, melee minions should block his path helping you disengage.
  5. Finally just ask you jungler for a gank. TK doesn't have much for an escape and only has high single target burst (until Hydra/Sunfire at least). A jungler helping CC or Burst him down should finish him if he over extends.

I know this is common tips for any melee character, but I hope it helps.
