Garen Changes Ideas
Right now Garen is a training wheel character that is, at least in theory, supposed to show you how to play the game. The problem is his everything is super-anemic to the point that 90% of champions with basic micro can just roll him, in particular other melee champs.
Jax with empower, riven with anything, darius, etc, etc. Despite the claims he's supposed to "counter" these champions, he really doesn't due to his poor early game damage and their ability to just force him out of minion waves and not farm. Therefore, here's some simple changes to bring him back to a champ you can out-micro but can't just walk into and attack:
- Take his scaling armor/mr off his w and just put it into his base stats.
- Move his preserverence passive into his w, and make it scale with the ranks in his w.
- Flatten out the number of hits on his spin in his e so it actually scales with ranks.
- Change the armor debuff on his e so it scales with ranks.
- Make his new passive 'stalwart' - allied minions and monsters gain some bonus attack speed.
- Nerf his flat damage and base stats marginally post-changes and improve his scaling with items (both in terms of % hp regen/damage absorption/armor reduction/crit) to enable either going full tank, full crit damage, or something inbetween depending on factors, along with keeping spin to win + silence from being too oppressive early game.
- Make judgement passive tooltip explicitly state/target "Champions that have the most amount of gold on the enemy team, as long as the gold is greater than yours'. Retargets when an ally is killed."
Congratulations, a champ that now relies entirely on macro, and where you should think a little before going in, along with providing ample details on how to play while maintaining the minimal micro champ you know and love. If you want to decrease micro, revert the change where his q goes on cooldown until you actually hit something, and just make it go instantly on CD as soon as you press the button.
Edit: Yes, I realize the argument is 'you can just hide under tower!' but it's pretty easy for those state champs to either outscale you or still get free hits in. Maybe that's a problem with them; maybe it's supposed to be set up that way, or you're just supposed to wait for the jungler. Either way, it isn't much fun.
