How does XP work in-game?

I was wondering about this. I just played against a Riven as Darius and I noticed how much more XP the other person had despite me having a farm lead. They were level 4 when I was still level 2. I don't understand how this works especially if I have more farm. She didn't have a kill or an assist and she said she didn't have XP runes either. I'm just baffled by this. Can someone explain to me the spaghetti coding behind this and how I can maximize my XP like how she somehow did?

You gain xp from being within xp range of minions, you don't have to last hit them. You also gain xp from kills and assists.

It's hard to know how Riven got such a big xp lead on you without watching a replay, but generally what causes that is you either roamed or backed at a time when your lane opponent was able to shove the wave into your tower so turret shots killed a bunch of minions while you were outside of xp range.

It's also possible that Riven grabbed a jungle camp or two, but that would be unusual that early in the game (maybe she stole blue from her jungler?)
