Malz: Hoping He Gets Nerfed.

Is Malzahar getting reworked?

He needs it, badly. I was laning against him as Katarina (blind pick) and we were even, we even killed each other at the same time for our first kills... then came his minions. I was pushed out of farm and forced to defend turret in such a way I couldn't get to the ranged minions (tower got them first) directly attacking my turret - because sticking my neck out that long was fatal, I was eating enough damage just trying to kill the melee troops right on my turret. This was without his ult.

My best suggestion to fix this is to make sure the minions can't chase so far away from Malzahar . Let them be bodyguards, not long range cruise missiles. And maybe increase the cooldown too. Also, prevent minions (both his and the normal ones) from carrying/applying his DOT (I attacked a cannon minion while Malz was out of vision range and still got tagged): that thing does so much damage that he should make himself a little vulnerable to have to apply it.

So that's it for my complaint and suggestions... assuming he isn't being reworked already. I'm no professional, not even an expert; but maybe I was just playing against someone really good? Because I could assassinate other champs just fine... actually it was a bit too easy in two of the cases (no, I wasn't stealing kills, I was properly working for them and dealing generous damage on my kills).

I think this is one of those "Is it the champ or the skill of the other player?" things. Because experience has taught me that Janna is still one of the best supports in the game, you just need to be very good with her or you'll do nothing with her.

Edit: 6 or so responses came in, making it very apparent that it is a 'skill of the player' thing, and not the champ itself. Believe it or not, that was my first time playing against Malzahar, and your suggestions on his weaknesses are appreciated: I will try them out the next time I end up in that scenario. I still think the minions should stay within a certain distance of Malzahar, rather than being able to chase as far as they can... slowing their movement speed might also be an option. But other than that, it seems just ignoring his auto-attack is the best was to go; it's why I didn't get close enough to him to kill the minions. Guess I was way too cautious.

Thank you everyone!

Malzahar is in a terrible place. He has very little lethality unless ahead or his enemy laner screws up massively; you pick malzahar not to carry, but to starve out snowball reliant champions and act as an auxillery support.

Your problem sounds like you dont understand what malzahar does.

Dont. Let. Him. E. You.

If he gets his E off while he has more than two minions out, youre gonna eat a lot of damage. So dont be in that situation. His minions have a long cooldown and an average duration, when theyre down youre safe to be close. otherwise stay out of his E range and try not to get effected by it. Also, youre katarina. You have all kinds of AoE and all you really have to do is shunpo flourish onto the first voidling and its dead, rendering a good portion of his power budget useless.

Malzahar was reworked already, like recently as far as reworks go.

However you are right in one thing, he is not in a good spot right now. You are wrong in that he is too strong though. He does not need nerfs at all, he is in a very bad spot because he was nerfed so hard. Now all he can do is farm and push lanes, the only way he can kill you is if you stand there and let him.

Want to know how to beat him? Don't let the E bounce to you and kill the very first Voidling that spawns before it creates another. Buy a QSS or a hexdrinker.

His damage is garbage unless you stand there and let like 4 Voidlings wail on you for free with his E on you. Late game he can melt tanks, but thats like 4+ items late game and assuming he was allowed to just farm.

Malzahar absolutely needs another rework, this recent rework basically made him terrible to play as, its no fun. I am still kind of annoyed because he was my main and now I am still looking for a champion to fill that role.

Malzahar got nerfed a ton right after the update, and now he's pretty easy to 1-shot if you just engage on him instead of letting him poke. However, he does counter people who can't build QSS or 1-shot him from out of his ult range pretty hard. I like playing Kassadin against him since Kassadin's Q interrupts channels, like his ult, and he takes 15% less magic damage just naturally. I know this was blind, so picking your champion based on your opponent's pick just wasn't a possibility, just something to remember for the future if/when you see him.

Also, with the assassin update coming out tomorrow or something, he's gonna probably become popular again just because he counters every assassin to exist except new Rengar and Kassadin if Kassa uses his Q before Malzahar ults and Malz ults while the Q is flying.

(BTW why I say he doesn't counter Rengar is because, if Rengar can get up 4 Ferocity stacks before Malz ults him, Rengar can W to cleanse it).

As for your nerf suggestions, having the minions have to stay within a certain range of Malzahar would be good, as would increasing the W cooldown and E cooldown, but having the E jump from minion to minion when the target dies is one of Malzahar's unique things. It's his unique farming mechanic that's so core to his identity, Riot wanted to keep it with the mage update. Malzahar just isn't Malzahar without the space AIDS spreading through your minions to you. Stay out of the range of the jump when your minion is about to die and you'll be fine, or at least keep a different allied minion closer to that one than you.

Malzahar has received literally nothing but nerfs since his update. It seems like you obviously have no idea how to play against him for you to make a thread like this.

He has almost zero kill pressure before 6 unless you pretty much let his E get tagged onto you. Early on it does almost no damage so he has to stand close to the minion wave if he wants to try to get it to spread since he will have to auto attack the minions a few times for it to finish them off.

If he uses his E on a minion at high health, that means he didn't use it on you, which means that is your chance to move in and try to get some damage onto him. If you can pop his shield beforehand, then once he uses his E on a minion then just combo him and walk away and there's pretty much nothing he can do.
