What is the main reason you lose games?

Greetings fellow summoners! There could be a plethora of reasons why people may lose a game, ranging from bad match-ups all the way to downright terrible team mates.

Winning streaks are always nice and losing streaks.....demotivating, but we can't possibly win ALL our games. So I'm asking you.....

What is the main thing that causes you to lose games? Have you ever caused your team lose a match from your mistakes?

It's a variety of reasons, but the ones that stick in my mind the most are:

  • Someone went AFK/ragequit or trolled on my team
  • Teammates are too busy flaming each other to focus on the game
  • I play really badly due to losing motivation because of the above two points
  • Our team don't work well together (not really anyone's fault, we just try to do different things)
  • We have a bad team composition / enemy team composition is better
  • The game goes on too long (my team doesn't close it out fast enough) and eventually someone throws.
  • Enemy team just play better than us.

The first two reasons annoy me the most, since they are completely beyond my control. The other reasons can be my fault or someone else's.

I could name everything my teammates do wrong. But I'd be saying the same thing as everyone else. So I'll name what I do wrong:

Poor decision making - Bad Baron/Dragon calls, allowing myself to repeatedly die when behind, getting overconfident when ahead. Or the worst one, following up on an action that I consciously know is a bad idea.

Poor knowledge of matchups - I keep my champ pool fairly wide, so I can't be banned out of any role. But this results in being put on a comfort pick in an usual situation. Yeah, I can play Hecarim, but I don't know how to play him against Garen, for example.

Failing to work with the team - I agree that it's hard to work with people who listen to me. I consider myself to be a decent shotcaller. But it's soloq, everyone's selfish (including ourselves). If the team won't listen to me, I have to start listening to them. Even if they're making what seem to be bad calls, we're at least playing as a team. If I think Baron is a bad call, but I'm not the jungler, I might as well follow the jungler if I deem it's safe. (If not, I retreat and recommend they do the same).

Little early game impact - I've adopted a fairly safe playstyle. I prefer to let the enemy make the mistake, but that leaves me vulnerable to early game aggression. I'm also a Warwick main (subject to change though).

Overconfidence based on last game - This is a big one. If I just carried a game, I'll pick the same champion, expecting to win. That's basically the biggest noob mistake in the book.

90% of players will say factors associating teammates, when most of the game they play no one AFK'ed or raged and they themselves played like shit. I'm already reading a couple now.

Because I'm not as skilled or experienced as many other players. I need to play/practice a whole lot more.

going for baron after acing the team instead of just ending the game.

My teams engage 4v5 as I'm returning from base. Like WTF!?

BlackMagicWilson4/9/2015, 3:06:04 AM3 votes

Games are more often lost by their worst player than won by their best.

"IT'S MY TEAM'S FAULT! NOT MY FAULT! I'M TOO PERFECT!"

Dengeden4/9/2015, 6:12:47 AM3 votes

Usually I underestimate my opponents (because of some basic error, e.g. starting the wrong ability, making ganks painfully obvious) and proceed to overextend because, hey, I'm better aren't I? Oops.

And sometimes I should've roamed instead of taking the tower.

FantasySniper4/9/2015, 12:38:34 AM2 votes
  1. Not enough objective-taking, so we lose our lead.

  2. Team refuses to play it safe.

Slamurai Jack4/9/2015, 4:17:00 AM2 votes
  1. Overstaying after taking an objective, especially an inhibitor.
  2. One person getting caught late game baits the entire team into getting caught.
  3. Not knowing how to teamfight in any way other than "dive the enemy adc".
  4. That 1 guy that's never in the right place at the right time.
  5. 1 guy goes on tilt and drags down the rest of the team.
soh1gh24/8/2015, 7:07:40 PM2 votes

adc gets caught, baron throw, ragers / people that call out every ones mistakes nonstop all game ,afks

CrankyChipmonk4/9/2015, 7:26:30 AM2 votes

There are two main reasons I lost games.

  1. When I get really far ahead early but some enemy in a different lane ALSO get really far ahead. I tend to just derp around expected to be able to coast to an easy win and sometimes im not as fed as the enemy or we're close enough that instead i just throw.

  2. I just stomped hard last game with the same champion and i overestimate my trading power because im not as far ahead as I was the game before.

Lstrike4/9/2015, 8:23:52 AM2 votes

The main reason I lose most of my games is because of ff@20 because 1 of us gets first blooded (including me) because apparently the victory condition in silver/bronze games is who gets the first blood and not which team destroys the other teams nexus

Aheadatime4/9/2015, 4:12:26 PM2 votes

I'd say the biggest reason (besides lanes just getting stomped/FF@20) is just not grouping. I can't tell you how many times our team has had an early/mid-game lead and we throw it by wandering around the jungle solo for no reason without wards. After a few people die, the enemy groups and kills the last 3 of us. Then the first 2 respawn, and go die again, etc. The cycle continues until they have our nexus.

People, it's not hard. Just recall, upgrade your trinket, and group up with your team.

Blastermine4/9/2015, 7:37:00 PM2 votes

Poor communication. I tend to throw fights with dives that my team wasn't prepared to follow up on. I also have a habit of going for the hyper aggressive dives 90% of the time.

IcyPepper4/8/2015, 7:27:32 PM2 votes

How I win games: taking advantage of enemy mistakes.

How I lose games: enemies take advantage of our mistakes.

The difference between pros and noobs isn't just godly mechanics, it's making less mistakes.

RamboDash154/9/2015, 12:28:29 AM2 votes

Today I lost a game as Olaf jungle because I am bad and should feel bad for not making sure I had summoner 11. That is all.

Shield Villain4/9/2015, 10:23:46 PM1 votes

Most of the time I find myself losing because a team mate did bad during the laning phase, resulting in an enemy roaming and being fed. Carrying his success into the other lanes. Though other times it'll be my team fighting amongst each other to pin the blame on someone else.

There are moments where I fuck up hard, give up 2 kills by 20 minutes, and lose my tower. But I don't stop trying. So even if I cost my team the game I at least know I was trying and can carry that into my next game. That being said, teams can sometimes give up too easily when someone is doing badly, or there is an afk. I've won a few games where 1 team fight set the tone for the entire game. Likewise, games where there were no team fights and instead small skirmishes, split pushing, and objective control.

When I do make mistakes though, I feel I'm still adequate. Like I'm not giving up just yet, and I'll try to help my team as much as I possibly can. No split pushing for me, etc.

What irritates me the most though, is when I lose a game because someone wanted to be salty. They just had to comment on our ADC going 3-3-2 while the enemy adc is 7-2-8. Typically I see this coming from a salty support, or even more a salty midlane who thinks they're going to carry us all by insulting us relentlessly, lowering the team morale, and making everyone not want to play.

90014/9/2015, 10:34:00 PM1 votes

Biggest reason is my teammates feeding the other lanes and giving up instead of stopping the bleeding, focusing on the winning lanes, taking objectives, and stalling the game until winning a good fight can win the game. Yes I have made mistakes that have cost my team the game but it is very rare and I do my best to learn from them. One of my first games on Blitz before I was lvl 30 I accidentally grabbed the enemy Taric and we lost a big fight. 2 team mates told me to uninstall and never play again. Luckily I ignored them and improved and now I play a really mean Blitz :)

Kikirino4/9/2015, 5:53:51 PM1 votes

I got countered.

I fucked up early and never recovered.

I got cocky.

I was first pick and gave up my role to give it to a teammate that wanted it and I end up regretting that decision within 5 minutes. (Don't 'be nice'. Always take your role if you can)

AFK/Trolls

Other team was better.

Team doesn't listen.

Teammate gets fed and tried to 1v5 and loses. Multiple times.

I was ADC.

lil boy FUEGO4/8/2015, 7:44:20 PM1 votes

Bad teams ALWAYS usually make me loose. But more than anything its this simple theory. Its been posted before just a different theory. I believe this can apply to league very nicely.

Learned helplessness is a behaviour in which an organism forced to endure aversive, painful or otherwise unpleasant stimuli, becomes unable or unwilling to avoid subsequent encounters with those stimuli, even if they are escapable. Presumably, the organism has learned that it cannot control the situation and therefore does not take action to avoid the negative stimulus.[1] Learned helplessness theory is the view that clinical depression and related mental illnesses may result from a perceived absence of control over the outcome of a situation.[2] Organisms that have been ineffective and less sensitive in determining the consequences of their behaviour are defined as having acquired learned helplessness.[3]

Mazianos4/9/2015, 7:56:41 PM1 votes

I get overconfident, I know I do more damage than the other laner (I play Darius ), I get poked down to 1/3 hp, then I get bursted. I also push way way to much and try to make sure my tower takes no damage.

I also try to engage and fight even when behind. I play too aggressive when I'm not support.

Cupkek4/9/2015, 8:33:25 PM1 votes

More often than not, it's one of the following reasons:

  • Someone 'DC' after 2 deaths to their lane opponent.
  • Laners decide to recklessly push the lane and wonder why they're getting ganked and killed frequently.
  • One or two lanes will feed excessively or not ward.
  • ADC can't cs to save their life while also wanting to go HAM on the enemy ADC
SmknWdl4/9/2015, 1:18:57 AM1 votes
  • Bad teamwork
  • I go in too hard (i usually am always "that guy" who tries to 1v5. I mean i can get 1 for 3 or 1 for two but in late game my team might need me even though I've taken out their team, and half of the time i dont even pull it off)
  • MY TEAM SURRENDERS FOR NO REASON JESUS FUCKING CHRIST (most people cant just wait out with a LATEGAME TEAM COMP so they surrender riot please remove the surrender vote it's totally abused)
Spacesuit Spiff4/9/2015, 2:11:03 AM1 votes

Ok let's just get this out of the way: a lot of games are lost because someone on your team is playing at a level 2 tiers below the other 9 players, or thinking at a level 15 years lower than the other 9 players. Occasionally it's possible to salvage those, but one shouldn't obsess over them.

Second, we're all constantly missing opportunities that we don't know how to look for. That is the nature of the game. That's half the difference between how we perform and the dumpstering that would go on if a challenger player was in our elo.

Beyond that, I'll list a couple of reasons I lose: -Playing teamfights horribly. I really ought to look at the teams every couple minutes and make a plan for the next fight, but sometimes I'm tired and my contribution as the tank/bruiser will just be to wade in and try to kill a carry. Most of the time, it's better to not give the enemy carries an easy time killing you; either get on them and destroy them, or stay at the front line and make them work for the damage they do to you, while you peel and tank all 5 enemies. -Not tracking objectives. I have fairly good dragon control, but I still occasionally forget it when other things are going on. More of a problem when the rest of the team goes to farm top while our 5th dragon is spawning, which will happen pretty often if you're constantly telling them when it's gonna spawn. -Limited champion pool. Sure, usually easy to dodge when this becomes a problem, but I at least need to pick up an AP jungler for the games with Zed mid and Nasus top or w/e.

WhiskeyAgogo4/10/2015, 4:38:29 AM1 votes

Tons of posts about "team mates have made us lose" and not a lot of the reasons that the people here have personally made their team lose.

Anyways... the reasons that I've made us lose:

-pushing lane too hard and getting ganked... 2 or 3 times, thus getting the Zed/Fizz/Ahri fed. -not pinging when my opponent is missing from lane (worst in bot when I'm support...) -bad objective control - this has been mentioned --> going for Baron when we could just take like 2 inhibs... they come back and kill us, steal baron, then win. -hunting for kills.... chasing someone through jungle until the rest of the their team is there and I'm cornered -not warding

Daen4/9/2015, 8:47:54 PM1 votes

I generally lose games because of bad team compositions or being out-rotated. Admittedly, this is generally my fault because I play assassins like...everywhere.

Pirahna4/9/2015, 8:51:49 PM1 votes

I have issues with cs, warding, map awareness, and making costly mistakes in early trades. Tilting hurts me pretty bad too. pretty much everything bronze. I'm practicing blaming myself and learning from my mistakes. but i hate getting mad at myself. >_>

Miku Lv994/10/2015, 8:44:30 AM1 votes

Mine is usually the mid/late game. My allies get caught too much or just don't push enough. It's really frustrating when it's like 40 minutes into a game and my team has always been farming so much that we've never pushed anything. Or someone just gets caught so often it might as well be 4v5, or just positions so badly in teamfights that they're a free kill which does pretty much the same thing.

Dracid6/30/2015, 3:31:00 AM1 votes

I love how the majority of people here give reasons that don't involve themselves and just blame others

Burt Maclin4/9/2015, 9:02:45 PM1 votes

I think my biggest issues rest in decision making fails. Mechanically I feel much better than the bronze 3 that I am, but I think I need to work on these things to move up. Currently I main ADC and Mid.

  • Knowing when to freeze the lane and when to fast push it to bounce it off the enemy turret and why
  • Map rotations and calling for collapses
  • Converting kills into objectives (especially when you get a roam or gank)
  • Maximum efficiency warding
  • Paying attention harass timing in order to deny CS

Other reasons would be

  • Not having a shot caller and or teammates not following shot calls with the rest of the team
  • MAP AWARENESS MAP AWARENESS MAP AWARENESS

I'm sure there are more but these are the aspects I am currently trying to better myself in/stay on my team about in game. I've started typing "Wards win Games" into every chat before the game starts so it's the last thing they read before the game loads.
