Supp Mains: is aiming for the 40% CDR on your build critical to you?

Do you deem it important to get max CD on your abilities, or focus on building mainly damage, utility, and/or defense?

Note: I prefer the former, but have had experience with both build types. Just want to see what supp mains preferred.

I find that most support builds get 40% cooldown naturally- I don't necessarily aim for it, it just happens.

CDR is really only an issue in the sense anything past 40% is wasted, as most support builds will max CDR for you.

I prefer 40% cdr on almost every champ I play, support or not. Less downtime on my spells means fewer times when I'm like, "If only ability X were up now."

Supports have abundance of CDR items. I once played Sona with one of my mid rune pages. 20% CDR at level 18. I had CDR capped at level 10. As far as support itemization goes, I think that even those 5% from Masteries is wasted after you get 2 items. Try to get 40% CDR on a tank, mage, assassin or manaless champion. Not counting runes or Lucidity boots it's impossible without gimping your build with, for example, 2 Morellonomnomnomicons or 3 Brutalizer items.

The more important the utility of your abilities that do not scale (say with AP), the more important CDR is.

Soraka CDR is nice for her, but not critical since AP gives far more bang per spell cast. Leona PREMA CC LOCK! And it is really easy to get with items that give decent defense stats and help protect your teammates.

Nope, unnecessary. There are better items to build that provide more for a support than CDR does. Learning to land spells > spamming them.

i do my best to aim below 40% just cuz if I actually aimed for it i'd have like 80%.. 40% of which would be wasted lol

IcyPepper2/20/2015, 9:07:47 AM2 votes

Not really, most support items already do that.

Though, I will say I'd purposely build 40% CDR on Syndra support. Her ult basically scales with it, maximizing damage (critical for when she's supporting, since she won't deal nearly as much damage) so the adc can finish that squishy off.

Well i don't really aim for it and try to focus mostly on building utility but i have cooldown reduction runes and always get 40% cooldown deduction.............so yeah it really is........ :D

In my experiences supporting, if I build items that I want to get, I will almost ALWAYS hit max CDR. The only exceptions sometimes are if I'm playing a non spammy AP support (Morg/Annie I usually forgo CDR until later) or I am a tanky support. If I don't hit max, I usually end up with 35%. On most heal/shield supports, though, I will usually go over max with the items I want to build. I usually start really disliking buying those items since I feel it is a waste buying a stat that I can't make use of.

It depends on many things. Champion pick, your play style/goals for the match and what is needed. If you're a mage support, or Sona, then you're only cdr item will probably be Morellos with the rest being damage items. If you're something like Leona then you want to focus on tanky stats over just capping CDR. The only support I focus capping CDR is Janna, because it allows you to shield often in fights and skirmishes since you aren't really a tank nor damage oriented support.

TheFrozenIsles2/20/2015, 1:22:30 PM2 votes

Cooldown if I'm playing a CC champ but like other say it sort of easy to hit that 40 mark.

Solidair32/20/2015, 1:42:26 PM2 votes

My goal when playing support is to be as helpful as I can be. Often this means getting to 40% CDR. In fact, it's really hard to avoid reaching 40%, especially on the less tanky supports.

Morello's + Mikael's (+zhonya's + mobis + sightstone + void staff) = 30% CDR Face of the Mountain + Zeke's + Mikael's (+ mobis + sightstone + thornmail) = 40% CDR

Abyssphere2/20/2015, 2:30:20 PM2 votes

Always 40% CDR on mage supports. That small extra bit of time where you can shield/heal with 40% CDR that you couldn't otherwise might just be enough to save your ADC from death and the more reliably your ult is up, the better.

TheFameAnimal2/20/2015, 2:35:43 PM2 votes

I think about 30% is pretty good. For items, to me, it depends on the champion. e.g. with Janna I go ap Janna supp. This is so that my w gives more ms and it debilitates more ms on enemies, my e gives more ad for adc etc. and my ult heals more :D the q is just damage :/ But a bit of utility items cannot hurt :D

SmokingPuffin2/20/2015, 9:25:43 PM2 votes

Depends on the support. Blitzcrank doesn't care much for CDR. Sona thinks it's extremely super important.

Drunk Rummate2/20/2015, 9:26:34 PM2 votes

depends on the support

The more of your reply's, Dr3wOfDiamonds that I read, the more confused I am with what you're trying to accomplish here. Like I am totally lost.
