What Happened to CDR?

Remember the days when you actually had to decide if you wanted CDR, and if so build for it? Now it just feels like something that is built in, and it is more of a challenge trying to not pass CDR cap on almost every champion.

I believe their reasoning likely falls into one or more of these categories:

  1. They want to make "easier" build paths (warhammer, codex) and since the new item paths they choose have CDR in them they have to throw it into the final item.

  2. They don't know how to trim power on items in other ways, so they just minus some AP/AD and throw CDR on there to try and compensate.

  3. They want to eliminate CDR as something people build towards and make it something that is just acquired naturally through item purchases.

  4. They simply don't know what they are doing.

With the introduction of the new rune that converts excess CDR into AD/AP, it feels like they are just avoiding the fact that it might be an issue that it is so easy to obtain so much CDR, and instead of making changes so that it is an actual thought process they are throwing in a rune that allows even less thinking about the CDR cap.

Perhaps it is my stubbornness for change but I really miss building towards CDR on some champs and wish it could go back to being less items containing CDR, even if it means more CDR on each of said items.

TBH I miss the AP values of old more than I care about the abundance of CDR

I don't share your problems with this, I generally don't want to build CDR but I have to on some champions. When I play tanks, I'll most likely finish the game with sub 40 CDR. When I play ADC, same thing. The vast majority of the time when I'm jungling, sub 40, though some champions want 40% more than others. Depending on who I play mid, literally same thing. In fact, I find myself foregoing CDR. For instance, I'll very often buy Lost Chapter instead of Fiendish Codex, and even after I buy the codex I don't upgrade to morello right away, despite it giving me 10% more CDR.

And the decisions for CDR are still present, even if they are fleshed out because people know how to better play the game. All of the mid laners I know run 10% CDR runes so we don't have to buy it in items. I'm sorry I just feel like I'm totally missing your point.

hopefully the will raise the CDR cap and then add CDR onto more items so the standard mode slowly becomes URF

I remember when building cdr on champs like Nasus or Veigar was a unique thing that was specific to their kits. I also remember a time when, if i dodged an apc's cc once, i would eventually catch up to it. Now they just use it again in a few seconds.

Yeah I agree trying to not go over 40% is way harder than trying to get to 40% ever was. I find it especially hard on any bruisers. I mean I don't mind having 40% CDr all the time but it would be nice to not feel terrible wasting gold on something I don't need when I'm already at 50%

Wow....OP apparently never plays anything other than a mage. While a lot of mages can hit 40% pretty easy with standard builds a LOT of champs won't find themselves there. If anything, CDR has become more of a thing because Riot is reducing the stats of the game. There is less AP and HP compared to seasons ago when you could have 6000 or more HP on a tank. Frankly less AP and more CDR changes the skill needed. You can throw spells more quickly, but it's not like before when one mage combo would melt all but the tankiest of champs. Now some proper chaining and care in skill shots matters more and you get a little faster rotations.
