Yet another thread to discuss Crit
And no, this isn't going to be "gut crit" or anything like that, so if that's what you came for, I suggest you go now.
Crit chance is probably one of league's oldest mechanics. Even if the items have changed time and time again, the core part of crit has not. Crit chance has always been "with (X)% chance, deal double damage on a basic attack."
At first, there were no issues with crit; marksmen who fully invested into it would hurt, but assassins and mages could still drop them like flies, due to no natural defense or health. They might've gotten something like
or
(back when they were both tank items, for the most part), but they would still get murdered if caught.
The gradual updates to mage itemization, mages themselves, and assassins, however, as well as support item updates and marksmen item updates gradually pushed that balance out, or so it may appear. The once powerful counters were gradually weakened to allow for fair play on both ends, and the supports gradually made that even harder to balance. Things like
began to rise due to the need for extra, reliable damage.
The point is, the itemization itself may not be the problem, and maybe not even the champions, and hell, maybe even the mechanic itself is fine; but it is worth noting that a large minority (at the very least) complains about it quite vocally. So let's discuss. I'll list the player suggested updates to crit chance, and from there we can decide why one would or wouldn't work, and hopefully a Riot member sees it and at the very least can check on if crit should be updated.
>#1: Crit chance becomes a %damage amplifier to auto attack damage.
Rather self explanatory. It would standardize crit damage across the board, since there really isn't crit chance, as well as give marksmen reliable power boosts. However, thinking further about it, this change would actually very heavily favor high power single hit champions, such as Draven. Juggernauts could also become rather threatening with it, such as Darius, and any auto attack reliant champion, like Jax, could also shift into crit for similar reasons.
Because of all of that, I'm on the fence on whether or not it's a good idea. Moving on...
>#2: Crit chance is doubled, crit damage halved. Allows for double crits, which would deal the same damage as current live crits.
I believe one of the forum moderators made a thread about this. It's a rather simple band-aid which makes their damage output more stable without really reducing it. It could, however, lead to some very early damage spikes for marksmen.
>#3: Crit damage only applies to bonus armor/health
Something along those lines, anyway. It would push crit chance and crit damage away from a generalistic damage boost and more into an anti-tank stat. I don't think this would respond rather well; crits have been known for dealing large damage and changing that into a mechanic like this may as well not make it crit anymore. If anyone can find the thread (or threads) that has the explanation to this, that would be much appreciated.
I'll also toss in a suggestion of my own, being this:
>#4: Every auto attack generates "crit energy", based on crit chance. Once you hit 100+crit energy, that auto attack will critically strike, and then subtract 100 crit energy.
The general idea is that it would be something both players could play around. Think Jhin's autos. Every 4th shot for him is a crit, at all times, but he has to reload afterwards, and while holding on to the shot to zone, he might be missing minions unless he uses spells. A similar principle would apply; you would be able to zone with a crit attack, but sacrifice minions unless spells are used. The other benefit to this would be that a player would not need to build 100% crit chance to crit reliably. And finally, you wouldn't mess up farming because of an odd 50% crit chance not happening against a minion, or activating too early.
Anyway, for the most part, those are the general ideas thrown around for crit chance. If you happen to have another, then by all means, share. The idea is to try and get this stuff floating around so that hopefully a Riot member will see.
