So I've been trying my best to learn shen. Whenever I played top I'd feed like crazy and lose the game. However when I go Shen mid I seem to do a lot better and have won the games where I play him mid. Is this simply because I main mid lane so I'm simply better at playing a champ mid? Would Shen mid not be viable after getting out of low elo? I doubt he would work against spammers such as Ryze or Brand but what about champs like Oriana or ekko?
I would like to think Shen has potential to beat most melee champions in the game and that includes mid laners. But against ranged champs he has obvious weaknesses that ranged mages played by high elo players can abuse. I don't want to say it works because I have heard of some ridiculous things being mained in high elo but there is a reason he is normally played top.

Just about every midlaner is going to either ignore him or poke him out of lane by lv2.
Not viable because you are depraving your team of a AP mid laner and a source of DPS. Also Shen wants to split push and use his ultimate to appear in team fights. You cannot split push from mid. And if you want a champion like Shen for mid, just play Twisted Fate.
Uh if ur going against orianna ur gonna be in range for her to auto attacks you, and those HURT because of her passive, not viable at alllllllll....He can't really all in at level 6 because hes just gonna get cced and then messed up.
depends on the matchup.
You can work against someone like zed/fizz/yasuo.
But if you get matched against an ahri/leblanc, say goodbye to farms and kills, you can only win this lane with the junglers help.
But you have to have a damagey top like ekko/irelia something like that.
and your adc cannot be an ezreal otherwise you guys will get boned for dps
