What's a fighter supposed to be?

Out of all the types of champions, fighters are the weirdest as far as strategy goes to me. Tanks are usually supports, marksmen are usually ADCs, assassins tend to have abilities that fit the jungle very well, and mages can usually solo lane pretty well with the exception of maybe Taric, since his meta is support. But fighters can fit in almost any role since they have some durability, huge DPS, and kits that allow them to be played in, pracitically, any role you want. So what role does fighters usually play in, meta-wise?

Generally top or jungle.

Also, assassins aren't particularly jungle-oriented. There are several assassins that can jungle, but a lot of them can't.

Fighters are just a lazy way for Riot to categorize Champions in. They say there are Champions who build a mix betwen offense and defense... Yeah like players build Yasuo with 2 tank items and room for 3 AD items. Come on. Example Maw of Malmortious is not a tank item, it offers magic resist, AD and a really good passive.

Fighters are the branch between tanks, ADCs and assassins. They don't deal damage as consistently or in massive bursts as the assassins and ADCs, nor are they ranged like the ADCs, and they aren't as durable as tanks, but they are proficient enough in all three areas. They're basically a jack of all trades, master of none when it comes to damage and durability.

Lee Sin, Riven, Xin Zhao, Jax, Irelia.

Fighters are like Juggernauts except they don't suffer the penalty of having no mobility.

for me, theyre supposed to excell in smaller skirmishs and 1v1's against pretty much everyone.

while tanks, mages and supports on the other hand are very teamfight oriented, bringing loads of utility, aoe cc and aoe damage to the game.

and adc are objective oriented.

this is why some of the more self reliant marksmen are pissing me off so much. they bring the strongest damage in the game to objectives and champions, which makes them exceptionally strong in teamfights and objective control and pretty much irreplacable on a team already. i just hate marksmen who on top of it all can also 1v1 most champions.

especially vayne, graves, and tristana. and jinx just has way too much utility for an adc.

Fighter is also a bruiser. For me as a jungle main its a champion like Vi where I build Warrior into either Black Cleaver or Trinity Force and then go tank from there. You have that early game damage that keeps you viable throughout but also gives you the beefyness to front line a bit. Also usually have good amounts of AD for 1v1 fighting.
