Will someone from Riot please explain their MMR system?

According to op.gg and lol-mmr.com I had 1730 mmr in Gold 3. As soon as I began playing with 2000+ mmr players in duo queue my mmr only went down after winning 5 games in a row. How is that possible? How does my mmr go down after winning 5 in a row at a higher mmr than the previous one that I was playing at? I have a feeling Riot doesn't even understand how their own system works.

You do know those sites only guess at your MMR, they don't know for certain, right?

Yeah it's not particularly reliable at the sites that "show" your MMR.

Did you know you have a Normal game MMR? Mine varies wildly between low silver and low gold, and is often based on my KDR and W/L from only the last game. I just view it as a way to gauge how I performed in comparison to the players from my last game.

op.gg just does an estimate on what your MMR is. I have had that thing tell me that my MMR is "above average" from my league proceed to win my next game and then check and tell me that my MMR was "average"... how can i go from above average to average by actually winning is beyond me. You should just take the MMR 3rd party sites give you with a grain of salt
