Thoughts on Sion 5.8 Changes, suggestions from a diamond Sion Main.

Sion I've been playing Sion for the last few months on my main and smurf and I feel like sharing my thoughts after the recent changes.

The changes to his shield have made jungling with Sion incredibly difficult early on, with the lowered shield health at level 1 combined with the 3 second reactivation your shield can only take a single hit from a large enemy such as a buff and will then get popped by any small enemy, requiring very specific positioning and split second timing to absorb a hit and still detonate it, while the extra 1 second means that you can not activate the shield after a attack and still detonate it in time.

My suggestion is to increase the base value of the shield from the 64 or so you have starting out back to the original 84-90 HP at rank 1, while keeping the decreased scaling as items are built. 2.5 seconds on the shield would also let you detonate it in time on the faster enemies in the jungle combined with a Q stun.

Also, whatever happened to letting his ult continue if it was the killing blow?

I honestly don't think the shield nerf did that much to jungle Sion. It might make a big difference at your level of play, but down where I am the change is mostly just an annoyance.

I see so many comments about top lane Sion being ridiculously strong, but I just don't believe it. Sion isn't the universal lane bully everyone wants to make him out to be. He's actually quite vulnerable during the laning phase, but most people don't seem to understand how to abuse his weaknesses. Let's compare Sion to Nasus: both infinitely scaling tanks. Are you going to run just any champion pick into a Nasus? No, you want to shut that shit down before it gets out of hand. If you don't treat Sion the same way you treat Nasus, come 20 minutes into the game, you are going to have a monster on the loose tearing your team apart. Who would have thought?!?!

If you buff up on Sion you will find:

  1. He telegraphs every intention through his actions
  2. He starts the game with extremely low health as an immobile tank
  3. He lacks sustain and will become mana-gated by spell usage

From here you have a few options:

  1. Pick a champion with superior all-in
  2. Pick a champion with superior range and poke
  3. Pick a champion with superior sustain

Protip: there are plenty champs who possess one or all three of those qualities. Sion's match-ups go two ways: he can either get away with free farm or he cannot. The catch is that if Sion can't beat the all-in, poke or sustain he has to whittle his opponent down from range using E to land Q's and W's or he has leave lane to roam and make plays somewhere else. Give him two options: fight you for his farm or wait until you push it into his tower. If he tries to contest, pressure him from the side and work him into the all-in that he can't survive. He won't escape with his life unless you run out of lane, he burns flash or his jungler comes to save him. If he roams, push his towers down and pick on him in team engagements before he's tanky enough to handle it.

For those of you willfully determined to farm behind of or in the middle of the minion wave, Sion will land his combo and fuck you up good. Don't sit there patiently asking for an empowered E to the face. On top of that obvious counter-play, Riot mana-gated the shit out of his poke in one of the recent patches. If he tries to poke you down on his terms and you avoid any number of Q's, W's or E's then his mana bar won't allow him remain a threat. My last piece of advice: Sion players are gullible and most of them don't have the self-control or patience to properly engage. He will blow R at the whisper of an opportunity to finish someone off or engage a team-fight. Side-step the R and kite him to death. Even better if it's under your tower. If he left his team, then dive his carries because he won't be in any position to protect them. If you can't do any of these things, then you didn't pick the right team composition and you probably should've dodged.

This is all so mind-blowing, I know. Truly ground-breaking information. No, I'm kidding. These are simple strategies that take basic skills to execute. Never forget: the number one rule to fighting Sion is listen to Sion. He will tell you what he is doing as he yells at the top of his lungs, stands still to channel his axe smash or shouts angrily in your general direction. Sion is literally the definition of counter-play and if you guys couldn't figure it out before they gutted him, then I think League's worse off than I had previously thought.

Says smurf account Okay, just discredited everything you just said.

That thing about his ult was never implemented, because while it was cool, it was REALLY overpowered in the testing they did, especially considering he was a very strong champ at the time.

Dude sion is the tankiest piece of shiznit I have ever seen in league. You literally almost have to TRY to die with him during laning phase. It is an absolute joke. I pick him every single time I go top, unless he's taken then I go Cho. It is SO ridiculous, I can't believe he's been allowed to be this tanky.

I think that Riot should have chosen to make Sion's W scale up over the course of the game or have a longer reactivation time.

He'll survive the change, but his jungling was hit harder than it needed to be. If top lane Sion is the problem, Sion's nerfs shouldn't be so detrimental to his jungling.

as with every champion thats been nerfed since the beginning of league. Riot never thinks about every role the champion can play. He's being balanced based off his top laning abuse. Which is broken as shit btw. Really only riven can deal with top lane sion atm and thats because of her ability to avoid his abilities.

His base AD is pretty decent considering his late game hp scaling is absurd and lets him trade really easy with a lot of other bruisers.

Now you know how us AP eve players felt.

Or how us AP mid/top lane janna players felt.

Fuck you for wanting to play something in another role :^)

Oh I rarely see you on the forums. This the guy I learned how to play Sion jungle from before it was popular :)

I just feel with a slight bump to the base health of the shield his jungle would be restored, it currently can't tank a hit from a big monster + a small monster on any camp, both krugs will break it and a buff + one of the two mini monsters will break the shield before you can detonate it in time while still absorbing anything.

a extra 20-30 base HP to the shield would be enough for it to tank a single hit from the buff monsters and still be detonated.

I'd like to add that with the 5.9 dragon damage buff, you need to add a extra rank to his shield before it can survive a single hit from dragon and you can't reactivate it in time to explode it before a second attack comes out, which really hurts his dragon tanking and bursting it in a smite contest.
