Top Lane Champions?

The Allies Guy·11/19/2014, 3:38:59 AM·8 votes·5,128 views

I have 6300 (which is rare for me) and I was wondering which top lane is good since i don't have much top laners. I was thinking of Irelia, Darius, or Riven. Which one do you guys think is the best at early game, but can still have a major impact at late game fights? I was leaning towards Irelia or Darius but I'm not sure.

Get anyone but riven, don't become a riven main. It changes you! It changes you to a horrible human being who yells at everyone when they do bad but they build full ad and try to 1v3 every other second and if they lose their fight they blame their team and if they somehow win the fight they spam outplayed in all chat.

http://i.imgur.com/kc0yZ1j.png 100% proof that all riven mains are awful. Its a chart showing who rage quits the most.

"Getting a 1v1 kill as Riven? "OUTPLAYED N00B" Losing lane? "Fucking lucker" A summoner has disconnected" -I copy pasted that

Riven is kinda out of the meta right now imo. Darius bomb in early game he will rekt u hard and if he gets fed and tanky he will carry

Since your "Silver I" I recommand ones of the following champs for toplane:

  • Lissandra: She basicly replaced Ryze if you need a AP top. She great since she scales with skill.
  • Irelia: She's really strong add the moment but she has her skillcap and is still really strong even if you don't have it.
  • Tryndamere: What is needed to counter you doesn't exist in that elo.
  • DrMundo: Only vs dubble AP
  • Ryze: Still strong since what's required to counter you doesn't exist in that elo.
  • Pantheon
  • Vladimir
  • Malphite
  • MasterYi: What is needed to counter you doesn't exist in that elo.

Champs that I wouldn't buy for the toplane in your ELO if I was you: KassadinYorickGnarNasusUrgotNunuTaricJayceNidalee

Champs I'm not sure off: DariusJaxRivenKayleWarwickZacTrundleMaokaiSwainSionAatroxGarenMonkeyKing

Other champs like Vayne I think she's really intressting to practice there and again what's needed to counter you doesn't exist in that elo. So I think it can work but only if it's for practice to move her to the botlane in the end.

Darius gets ganked and kited easily Riven is a powerhouse but hard to learn/master,endless mobility. Irelia is rather basic,a bit hard to gank, near impossible to dive, can tank while dealing moderate damage with utility. Darius if you are in Bronze Irelia for Silver Riven for Gold+

Of what you put forward, I would say Irelia. However, I would actually suggest come cheaper champs - Ryze, Garen, Maokai, Mundo. If you want to put forth the effort into learning him, Rumble is a great buy.

Ryze requires patience, but he is an awesome counterpick to most melee top laners. His early damage is good enough that you can bully them and they can't get in range of you. Once he starts getting his tear and RoA stacks he becomes terrifying.

Garen is an easy top laner to learn the ins and outs of the lane. He's tanky, simple mechanics, and has a great execute.

Maokai is also an outstanding jungler, but you have to watch your mana spend with his ult. His E provides great poke, and his passive gives awesome sustain, especially against caster heavy top laners. His natural tankiness and sustain make him great in lane.

Mundo is a health caster, so he takes some getting used to, but he scales so well, and his damage is mostly based off of your health.

Rumble is a teamfight devastation machine, but learning how to keep his heat right, when to overheat, and how to use his ult take a lot of practice. But he is just devastating.

Hope that helps!

Irelia really tapers off in the late game. Go for Darius.

flibitydoo11/19/2014, 7:38:49 AM2 votes

Best at early game would be Darius. He does a lot of damage early on due to his bleed passive.

Most impact at late game teamfights would be Irelia. Riven functions as an AD caster assassin, which in a full out 5 v 5, if she can't get past the frontline of peel/exhaust then she contributes nothing. She is a great skirmisher and is amazing at small engagements and chases. Darius get's kited during chases and light engagements, and lategame he becomes a meatshield frontliner. Irelia's true damage, ultimate, stun and most of all, the huge tenacity steroid for being near enemy champions make her an amazing teamfighter.

Personally I would go with Darius as he is easiest to play out of all of them.

Riven is a great champion but no one will ever trust you to be anything other than a Rager/leaver/spammer/terrible player

RIVEN

PatMcGroyn11/19/2014, 8:17:26 PM2 votes

To answer OP's question, Irelia is a very safe, reliable pick in all stages of the game. Probably one of the best all around top laners. Standard build is Tri Force into tank, with a potential 2'nd damage item thrown in at some point (BotRK, Ghostblade, & Zephyr are all common & popular items).

Darius is one of the best top laners to play into bruisers, as his damage is really friggin high naturally, but can get kited really hard by ranged champs, and gets shut down in team fights by CC. That said, if you can outplay and hook an enemy carry with low mobility, Darius has good sticking power with W, and high enough burst damage to kill squishies outright with his full combo. In teamfights, I generally prefer playing Darius as a peeler at first, shredding down the front line, and getting resets on my ult so I have the option of diving into the enemy backline if necessary. If you're getting shut down in teamfights, you can play Darius as a split pusher, although his low mobility means that a clean get away isn't always possible, nor is getting a kill 1v2 (or more), so you'd better hope your team is good of taking advantage of the map pressure you're providing in those moments where they send more than 1 for you. My preferred build is Phage or Cutlass into some tank items (if I'm going to teamfight), or into Tiamat if I'm going to split push. I often will take Flash + Ghost for team fighting, or Flash + Exhaust/ Ignite if I really want to duel.

Riven's laning isn't as good as either of the aforementioned, but if you can pick up some kills or farm really well, she's a beast with items, and has the highest stomping potential of all three. Her AD scaling is the strongest and most natural, and if you really wanted to you could go for a tankier bruiser build that will still do damage, but have better survivability. My preferred Riven build: item 3074 item 3071 item 3158 item 3065 item 3143 item 3035

Very high damage, but also decently tanky, and you have a ton of mobility. If you want to go full damage, you could forego Randuin's and SV for a GA, and get a 5th damage item like Bloodthirster/ Infinity Edge. If you wanted to go tankier, you could drop the Brutalizer item and go for a GA/ Warmogs/ Banshee's/ Thornmail, depending on your needs.

Darius is borderline broken early game due to his bleed DoTs; however, he has no defensive cool downs of any sort, and is very reliant on getting kills early to stay relevant.

Additionally, he has no methods to cover a lot of distance quickly, making him extremely easy to escape from when the enemy does have some form of gap closer even if they are slowed by the bleed DoTs. One main advantage of Darius is that he can put out decent damage without his abilities, which makes champions such as Garen a lot easier to deal with.

Irelia is fairly decent across the entire game. Her gap closer resets on kills and applies on hit effects. Plus, she has a stun and a true damage AA enhancer with 50% up time. Her ult allows her to practically win every 1 v 1 by launching her blades through the enemy into a wave of minions. (The blades return health on damage dealt,) Her natural damage is so nice that people normally build her tanky as well. Against Irelia, there is no such thing as a health advantage. When playing her, I generally rush a sheen early so I can wave clear with resets from Q.

Riven is probably the most difficult to play among the 3. She has basically no regeneration at all, the little she has is just a token for RIot to say that her lack of self-healing is not a bug. I generally rush an early Tiamat to compensate for that disadvantage.

Riven scales extremely well with AD. Although, that does not mean one should only build AD on her. One or two defensive items is gives an optimal amount of tank - stats without giving up too much attack power. The unique aspect of Riven is that her kit can be used to combat anyone. ie. 3rd Q, AA, and a quick E back provides a nice poke against anyone you cannot trade against. Once you get the hang of weaving in AAs in between abilities, Riven will probably outperform the other two.

Overall, I recommend Irelia just based on how overpowered she is, granted that you can land her ult. Darius is a good early game pick that could leave you useless later on if you are matched with a ranged top-laner or a sustain tank who can kit you or deny you kills. Riven takes a while to learn, and is hard countered by many "noob" champions such as Garen, Olaf, and Jax. (Not to mention Ryze and Gnar, but that is true for all top laners.)

Champion Skin11/19/2014, 9:55:46 AM1 votes

You could also go with someone like Jayce he is pretty good at all stages of the game though he can be a bit hard to play

Or there is the hated Ryze though I am not so sure how strong he is after the nerf as I haven't really played him

Other then that Irelia is probably a good choice yes

There is also Swain though he can struggle a little if he doesn't get blue buff in the mid and late game And well he is pretty good at bullying melee champions he is pretty good early and has a great mid game with some items and his late game is alright (he suffers a bit with his short range and no mobility)

Nidalee, as an ap top laner she has a massive amount of early game dmg, and even if yourbehind you still hurt ALOT, the good part about ap nid is that once you learn her you become a teamfight menace, and i have atleast 300 total nidalee games so i know this. Hard to plau but strong throughout the entire game.

Raja Chachki11/19/2014, 2:32:42 PM1 votes

Irelia(most fun, very strong, not too OP), then Darius(strong, but falls of late game), and then finally Riven(strong early, if she gets like 3-4 kills she won't fall off late game.

iamthegoatofwar11/19/2014, 2:57:15 PM1 votes

Riven ate some fairly hard nerfs and can get bullied out with relative ease. Irelia is decent if you like early game and mid game power. Darius is like akali, he waits till 6 sometimes and he WILL kill you if you haven't killed him.

IMMASCOOPYOU11/19/2014, 3:52:58 PM1 votes

Can someone explain to me how Irelia falls off late game? I always thought once she hits lv 12, as long as she has good cs, and hasn't fed, she becomes a nightmare?

Dedrien Hawke11/19/2014, 4:57:00 PM1 votes

Darius is great early game and very easy to pick up and learn. He would probably give you the most out of your purchase. 50% extra damage on the Q is pretty crazy if you hit it. Plus his E+Q+W combo does crazy high damage at level 3. I would recommend him over Riven or Irelia. That's just me.

MrBuffington11/19/2014, 5:06:05 PM1 votes

Yea i've been modifying my own champion pool accordingly, the only exception for me is that I'm still playing Nidalee since she's honestly the champion I'm most comfortable/best with; I've already invested a lot of time into her and I feel like she's a champion I understand pretty well (better than any other champion, at least), but I probably wouldn't recommend new players to pick her up.

EDIT: I should note that I'm only playing AP Nidalee in mid lane; I don't really like Nidalee in top lane, AP or AD.

PatMcGroyn11/19/2014, 7:31:36 PM1 votes

All you guys saying that Irelia falls off late game are fucking crazy. 75 true damage & 26 health restored on hit with W, a 2 second stun on E, and a 650 range dash on a 6 second base cooldown (3.6 second CD with max CDR), and 40% tenacity when around 3 or more enemy champs. And the crazy thing is, you only need 1 or 2 damage items for her to be a huge threat to the backline. She shits on carries 1v1.

Riven my Wife11/19/2014, 8:15:04 PM1 votes

I personally never suggest darius to anyone, hes a very basic champ who you learn quickly and in later elos, imo, is terrible due to lack of late game ability and low outplay potential compared to someone like nidalee or kassadin. Id say pick up irelia because she is much easier to learn than riven and overall an incredibly useful champion to know how to play. If you are up for a challenge then go for riven, shes incredibly fun to play and can be very rewarding when her combos are used right, she has one of the best level 2's out there.

Corgski11/19/2014, 8:26:11 PM1 votes

If you're new to the game you want to play a champion that can "hold his own" and not something mechanically complex like Riven or Lee Sin. Irelia isn't a bad choice but I personally would suggest someone safe like Dr Mundo (despite being out of the meta).

Irelia and Riven are both played in high ELO. Darius is a rare one.

Irelia's early game isn't that great but scales well into mid game. Mid game is your supreme time to shine. If you do well in mid game, you also do well in late game.

Riven has some great poke which makes her decent early on. One annoying issue with Riven is that you will be somewhat useless and fall behind greatly after two mistakes (you died in lane or farmed less than opponent). YOu have to master Riven fully in order to win. You can't make any mistakes.

Irelia has a far better late game than Darius. If u kite Darius, he's useless. At least Irelia has a good gap-closer

TEssaDar182/15/2015, 2:58:28 PM1 votes

I personally find jayceJayce is a really strong pick because he has an ok early game, especially being ranged he can poke quite easily. His mid game is really strong once u get those ad items and ur tear stacking. Personally, i find the mid game one of the most important part of the game especially in solo q because it can decide the rest of the game.

Velasan11/19/2014, 5:02:35 AM1 votes

It comes down to play-style honestly. I play irelia because she fits my play-style the most, but they are all strong and for different reasons.

If you're not used to top laners or don't know these characters I say choose darius because his mechanics are the simplest. He bypasses armor, and his ulti is reusable when you kill someone. Essentially it's pull, hack, slash, hack, ulti and that's darius in a nut shell.

Of those you put forward, probably Darius.

I personally, however, will always suggest Dr. Mundo, to everyone who asks about top lane. You may not be interested in getting him this purchase (if you do not already have him) - but he is very fun, and a great champ.
