Necessarily Large Rod - for Deathcap please
Changing Deathcap's build to 2 Needlessly Large Rods is a step in the right direction, but the problem changes from a) sitting on 3 components and b) the final combine cost being high to c) all three purchases (NLR + NLR + Combine) are expensive purchases.
I understand not wanting to make anything build in to Needlessly Large Rod. I do. There should be big purchases where you gain an advantage if you're able to stay in lane long enough to save that much to buy.
That being said, two Needlessly Large Rods is a tad overkill isn't it? Can't we do the following for Deathcap?
Deathcap -> Needlessly large rod + Necessarily large rod where Necessarily large rod -> Amplifying Tome + 815g (or Blasting Wand + 400g, but i think it's better to build out of Amplifying Tome).
It can still give the exact same stats for the exact same cost as Needlessly Large Rod. It can ONLY be built in to Deathcap, and Deathcap still requires 1 Needlessly Large Rod. The item is strictly there to make the buildpath nicer and allow you to opt in to Deathcap when it feels necessary (much like how Giant's Belt was allowed to build out of Ruby Crystal, so tanks weren't punished for building an early ruby crystal for health then not being able to build it in to the final item they wanted - mages should be able to build an Amplifying Tome for damage and eventually be able to turn it in to a Deathcap). We're not making a mini-Deathcap passive so you still get that huge thrill / powerspike from completing the item (which is what you want).
For me, the one redeeming quality to Deathcap's buildpath was when I was going for a Luden's second item sitting on Needlessly Large Rod + Tome, if I happened to get a few kills before basing again I could turn that into a Deathcap instead of Luden's. That option made second item Deathcap practical...
