. The main thing I care about is whether the champ is fun or not but I do enjoy tanky champs.
If you have any other suggestions for fun top lane champs I am open to them as well.
Never played Ornn.
Maokai is the poster child of health tanks. You don't do damage based on HP but you do heal so you just build 3k plus HP and become this heal tanking beast with loads of CC.
Shen also never played.
Yorick is what you pick to goomba stomp fools. Your Q hits like a truck, but your Q with Tri hits like a train. You get Tri into juggernaut items and you just turn into this walking nuke. You don't do much in teamfights besides Q the other frontline but you split push really well with R. You can also trap people out with your wall and your ghouls are good harass.
Basically take Mao if you want to be a pissed off nature spirit, take Yorick if you wanna quite Hamlet on your lane opponents corpse.
I like ornn he is a tank that also deals damage. His passive with the upgradeable items helps the team and the other part of his passive helps him have a strong lane phase. I like to start with two potions and then buy dorans shield when im in lane.

if youre really into split pushing, 
is a pretty good counter to ad heavy teamcomps.
i mean you can try garen any time. hes very cheap to pick up, almost always on free rotation and hes pretty fun and has a ton of different item builds that work on him
against squishy teamcomps and for split pushing
if you need to be a beefy frontliner for your team in fights
predator keystone and lethality 
into defense for aggressive roam playstiles and finding picks
into defense for the lategame carry. (his q and spin can crit).
compared to most of the champion pool, garen is probably one of the champions with the most viable build diversity in the game. the only problem is, he doesnt have a lot of really good keystone runes. but otherwise you can build a ton of different items on him.
