The climb is not fun and doesn't make sense.
I know this is well-trod territory, so bear with me. Riot has made a heavy investment in the notion of the annual MMR-climb in advance of their e-sports events. I would like to make the case that this doesn't make sense for the average player.
Basically, the question is this: Why do I have to earn the right every year to play at my correct skill level? First, the facts - as we all know, every year there is a pretty brutal MMR reset. I was Silver 4, now I'm Bronze 4. Bronze 3 in flex queue. This is normal. If I play games, and win more often than not, I will eventually rise to something approximating my level, such that each game I play is with players of my own skill. I think this is true, but it takes a significant investment of time.
So why do I have to invest this time EVERY YEAR? Does someone of the same skill level as me who plays 3 times as many games have more right to play with other people at our identical skill level? Do I have an obligation to put a certain amount of time into this game before the play experience becomes fair?
"How do you know you deserve to be at a higher rank?" you may ask. "Maybe you're just bad." Well sure, this is possible. So Riot has a system that's supposed to help with this, I presume. I won 8/11 of my placement matches for Flex Queue and got Bronze 3, and 7/10 of my placements for Solo/Duo and got Bronze 4. One of those games was a 3v5. Statistically, it's not realistic for me to do better than that. At the very least, this is enough information for Riot to say, "Hmm, we might not know how good this guy is - he might be better than his MMR." - but they don't take advantage of this. In fact, the only way for me to break out of this cycle is to grind enough to rise as high as I can this season, and then put in almost as much time next season to match it, etc.
THIS IS NOT FUN. I don't have that kind of time! This game is not my life. I'm not an e-sports pro. Rethink this please, Riot.
