Why is Riots new design philosopy "the same abilities, but for everyone"?

Not necessarily dissing it, but also not necessarily not dissing it. It may work well, but it also seems like some inherently lazy design, just taking an old skill and then saying "now on this new champ, everyone can do it".

Kled ult is just Sion ult but for your whole team! Ryze ult is just TwistedFate ult but for the whole team! Taric ult is just Kayle ult but for your whole team! Kindred ult is just Tryndamere ult but for EVERYONE! and now Ivern is coming out with a Q which is almost literally LeeSin Q but for your whole team!

Again, nothing inherently wrong with it, but it just seems like lazy design. Is there a reason to this philosophy?

Games been out a long time, innovation becomes hard. Becomes better to improve the old and occasionally bring new things when they come.

Its like Apple philosophy, we don't need new things we just need to make whats already there better.

Let's do some simple math... 130+ champions.. 4 abilities + passive on each means over 650 abilities. Now let's add in the fact that some have passives + actives, some have two actives per ability (depending on the form) and we're probably nearing 1,000 abilities.

So now... we have a handful of abilities that are similar to each other and we call the whole thing lazy.

The power balance in the characters are set to work with those abilities affecting more than one person.
