What Player ELO Should Riot Balance Its Game Towards? (examples: Bronze? Platinum? Challenger?)
I have been debating with myself lately which ELO should League of Legends as well as other MOBA's like Overwatch gear its balance changes towards. I know this is a League of Legends Forum of course but i'm going to use Overwatch as a example.
I play Overwatch on the PS4 and in my opinion Overwatch has been going in the direction where they are buffing the lesser skill cap Hero's causing the the higher skill cap ones to fade out of the meta, especially in the games lower ELO's. Although I don't really like the idea of empowering the lesser skill cap heroes I think that it could be better for the game overall. In these MOBA's where the vast Majority of players will always remain in lower ELO's it does seem fair to a extent.
But I do see that how League balances its game is the fairest way. League has always seem to made game balance changes based off the maximum potential of whatever they were changing was. League has pretty much always favored high ELO in fact VERY high ELO play when it decides its changes. There are a few Champions that dominate at low ELO's but are near useless picks in higher ELO's,
comes to mind. People often complain about his true damage ult and hes seemingly tankyness while being able to dish out lots of damage. Of course alot of higher ELO players have perfected Kiting which destroys Garen's impact in anything other than the lane phase.
There is also a lot of different Champions whos impact and play style can be easily countered by a team who is non-toxic and communicates, such as a proxy
and of course, there tends to be alot more toxic/non-communcative players in low ELO which allows a Champion or a strat to flourish against a lower ELO group and may not work so well against a higher ELO group that rationally communicates.
But even with all these benefits of seeing Champions in their full light at the Higher ELO level is it not fair to the lower ELO's/ the majority of the player base? I think it almost comes down to a duty type of decision. Is it Riot's or any games duty to improve the game/cater changes to the majority player base? Or is it more healthy for a game to balance based of the highest potential of what ever it is their messing with. After all we here in the United States believe in a representative democracy where the majority pick their representatives and they in good faith are suppose to vote for changes that improve the majority's lives. Why doesn't Riot follow a balance template that caters to the majority and not the the high skill level higher ELO's?
After thinking about this I can see why something as simple as Candy Crush or Call of Duty is so popular. Because its relatable and easy to get into and fun for a awful lot of people, and maybe thats the genius of games of that nature.
But then again League of Legends is like no other game in this entire world. If changes were made to improve life and cater to lower ELO players who will never reach a high skill level it could ruin the game for the higher ELO and even the whole health of the game. Say Riot was to remove poor
interactive animation canceling and instead build it right into the abilities. Box Box and all those pro Riven mains would be gutted emotionally and just cheaped out by garbage players who couldn't handle
advanced mechanics on their own so Riot gave it to them for free. Now thats not fair for people who worked so hard to get those combo's down and have the skill and dedication to pull it off. Also if Riot just stopped interactive AA canceling on Champions were it was possible and just built it in once you had the stuff to do it. Thats also not fair to people with the skill who could pull it off.
If the game was ever geared towards casual, lower skilled and lower effort players, I could see how it could destroy the game. But maybe it just be a better game for the majority of people if it was geared in a manner to cater to lower skill. But I don't know, i'm not a game developer and I don't feel strongly for one side or the other.
