Tryhard/Full Mage Supports

I honestly don't understand the appeal of full, tryhard mage supports these days. It feels like a major cheese pick that you play just because it's low risk/high reward in a lane where everything is circumstantial. Veigar: Large AOE stun, zone control with W, autodelete ult. Lux: Ranged stun with 2 opportunities to land, aoe slow. Brand: High DOT, zone control, cc and team focused ult. Fiddle: Spam the E, ult from bush. All of these champs are just another ap carry in a lane where it's easier to completely remove the other team from the equation of laning phase and mid game. Sure, you could argue that THAT'S THE ENTIRE POINT of these cheese champs: Easy game, easy win/Deny any chance of the enemy bot lane to have cs, kills or impact on the game at all. But I feel like that defeats the purpose of climbing the ladder with versatile, useful champions to the team rather than exclusively to the laning phase. Master Yi is an example, in terms of jungle. In lower tiers he's an easy champ to carry with. Farm, don't die, gank easy lanes, carry. As you progress into higher ranks though, you don't see him because players focus on champs that compliment the team or counter the enemy team. It just doesn't seem fair, logical or balanced for this to happen as much as it does for supports. It just feels bad when I'm playing a team oriented or utility focused support against a tryhard enemy bot lane and my adc can barely farm or stay alive, and I can't do shit about it because I choose Thresh/Braum/Alistar over Lux/Brand/Fiddle. Even in Gold, I still encounter this when I thought I'd be focusing more on team comps than worrying about my adc struggling against an incredibly difficult lane. Maybe I'm just whining because I don't play easy to win champs and can't counter them with who I play, whatever. Every time I see it though, the difficulty in winning lane, and by extension the game, becomes twice or three times as hard with very little room to come back.

Honestly, they really are cheese picks, but good players can crush them pretty hard. They also tend to either turn into carries late in game, or become useless in team fights. More often than not I feel like they become pretty weak due to their lack of CS. Now if they run as the DPS in that lane with another champ to support them, then its different, but also not as effective. If I see a mage in support, I groan because they are annoying, I see Ali in support and I am much more afraid.

Gold is still relatively low skill wise. You’ll keep seeing mage “supports” until plat at least. Take it from me. I got to plat 5 playing nothing but mage “supports.”

I see you're a Thresh main I also love the champion he is my most played since release! A lot of the mage supports you've listed here have a similar weakness that I think Thresh is very good at capitalizing on especially in the laning phase that you seem to be focused on in your above post! Hook them with Q and then they die pretty easily! GL on the rift, cheers, Strawberry Milk.

There's a term for that back in S2: Kill lane.

You are absolutely correct. It should not be allowed. The saddest part is ....choosing a 2nd AP carry does nothing to harm your team. By the time late game comes you've basically won. It doesn't matter what ELO. ELO doesn't excuse using cheesy garbage to get ahead. I just believe it's unfair to use a cheese pick with no cost or loss what so ever. Is there even a point to play support seriously?

I don't think this is a popular opinion but: what exactly is wrong with playing an apc as support? The goal of the game is to win, by any valid means. That could mean playing Shaco top or Taliyah support or whatever. As long as it works, it works. League isn't a fair game, and if you are filled support in a game, you aren't restricted to a specific pool of champions.
