It must be nice being an Ahri or Janna main
It truly must be nice living under the blanket of safety that Ahri's popularity has created to protect her from any hard nerfs. I say this because Ahri is a champion that has consistently had a winrate over 50% since January of 2015 with a playrate of no less than 5% during that time span as well. Most of the time her winrate is 52% or even higher with her playrate hanging more towards the 8-9% area (https://www.leagueofgraphs.com/champions/stats/ahri) . Any other champion with her statistics would be getting looked at for a HARD nerf but every time Ahri is even said to be getting looked at her playerbase gets up in arms on these boards. And even when the nerfs on Ahri go through, she is always ALWAYS compensated in some way.
Now we take Janna. The champ that is the prime example of a shield/heal support. Her current winrate is 53.8% while her pickrate is 21.8% (https://www.leagueofgraphs.com/champions/stats/janna). In that same timeframe of January 2015 to current, Janna has never had a pickrate below about 7.5% and her winrate has barely dropped below 52%. Now she is able to get away with this in part due to the fact she isn't the champion blowing your ass up every game or noticeably carrying games. She simply shields the carries and ults when they are getting collapsed upon in an unfavorable exchange. But her numbers would suggest a champion that requires a HARD nerf.
Now we take Gangplank (who yes I do main). Gangplank has been a strong pick ever since his rework where he seems to resurface time and time again despite multiple nerfs to his kit. For example: reducing keg carry limit from 5 to 3, Ult CD increased to 180 seconds, Bonus armor pen on barrels dropped from 60% to 40%, Q used to refund mana cost upon killing a unit and that was quickly taken away, etc. And now this last batch of nerfs (indirect or direct) were laid upon him sitting at a 51% winrate and about a 17% pickrate. Increasing his Q mana cost from 40-60 at rank 1 so now a GP player has to be a lot more conscious of what he chooses to use Q for (harass with poke or last hit minion). Reducing barrel sit time from 60 seconds to 25 seconds so you cannot zone out melee champs nearly as hard and it provides them better windows for trading on GP. And also barrels thrown into bushes no longer grant vision briefly. The last of the nerfs to GP being the Stopwatch activation being increased from 6 minutes to 10 minutes. All of those nerfs I truly understand and were correct to reduce his safety in laning phase.
But notice not one bit of compensation for Gangplank despite all of those nerfs, direct or indirect, was given. If Ahri or Janna or any other extremely popular champion were to be given that many unfavorable changes without compensation the boards would be littered with outcries of injustice and demanding compensation due to the fact she is "trash" now. I guess I am making this post because I'm seriously tired of the blatant favoritism shown to certain champs while others can be cast to the wayside. I can't even imagine how Quinn, Fiddlesticks, Mordekaiser, and Wukong mains feel.
level Gameplay update (he said he's waiting behind some VGUs but did not say that he was on the list), Morde is on the VGU list so he could crop up any time this year, Quinn is apparently getting a quality of life update very soon and Fiddlesticks is apparently also on the VGU list.
Frankly, they just really need to be able to pump out more VGUs per year. I know its not possible now if we want quality updates instead of class update like changes that no one was really happy with, but if they could get maybe another 2-3 update teams I think we would be at a point where we could see all the desperate cases finished and move on to champs like
or
who work fine, but wouldn't hurt to update a bit.
