Riot, why can't your own website gives the full context of a champion's kit?

SouL1ess·11/16/2014, 11:41:37 PM·121 votes·5,143 views

I always knew that Riot's own website is useless at giving me information since champion skills doesn't show CD (the reason why I thought Karthus was dumbly underpowered until I saw him in action), but it doesn't show other bonus effects the skills and passives have either, nor possible scaling on passives. You can update your champion page with each new release but your information is worthless.

I didn't even know Gnar got bonus stats scaling by level on his passive. What the hell? That isn't something you can just SEE in game, e.g. I thought Gnar mega form was a flat HP bonus, like Nasus or Renekton ults. Same thing with Darius's passive MS bonus for each bleeding champion nearby.

What I don't get is why doesn't Riot's website give full kit information of champions already released, and rely on third party websites to do it.

Why do it when others will? They're lazy.

I'm guessing because they want their champion pages to be clean and free of information overload... but I would love being able to go to the LoL website instead of the wiki to look up champions. I would support this.

i asked that question 4 years ago. still waiting for the answer.

if they ever get around to it, i hope they dont forget to change those useless descriptions on the champion pages in client, and add some actual numbers. how hard can that be?

you literally just need to copy paste the tooltips and other informations that are already there. all this data is already there in the files for the appropriate champions. they would just need to be displayed.

base stats and per level scalings aswell. health, mana, resistances, auto attack range, and everything there is to know.

Kinda reminds me how you won't find out all about a Pokémon on the official page lol

DaCush11/17/2014, 2:59:08 AM6 votes

That is one thing that has always annoyed me. I have to go to some third party website like solomid.net in order to see how much damage and how the abilities scale and everything else in order to see this without purchasing a champion.

There are also some other stuff that is really weird on champion pages.

Corki's and Evelyn's pages show 0 for the AD ratio on Phosphorous Bomb and the AP ratio on Hate Spike. I'm pretty sure these abilities scale off of these respective stats.

Ryze also has a messed up champion page in regards to his mana ratios: his page says his abilities scale off a percent of his mana (scale off a percent of his mana). In other words, they found a way to say the exact same thing twice on each of his abilities.

Items are a little bit better, although it would be nice to see the ranges on some of these item actives.

Tbh they often have a hard time updating their ingame text let alone full stat pages for all the champs

Stars Shaper11/17/2014, 7:49:33 PM4 votes

Supporting this.

  • The excuse of "new players" is dull because as a new player or approaching a new champion I WANT to know what is most benefit to build on him/her int erms of stat.

  • The excuse of "but patches and updates" is even more stupid because they should get their site up to date with the game no matter what, lazyness isn't an excuse for a company.

Woook3r11/17/2014, 3:25:25 PM3 votes

You should put the damn numbers up. Come on.

Squeaky Dreemurr11/17/2014, 4:19:34 PM3 votes

The website's champion pages are designed to give new and prospective players a preview of each champion, rather than a complete layout of number values. The latter would confuse and possibly turn off new and prospective players looking to learn more about the game. Riot ain't lazy -- they're savvy.

However, I think it would be convenient if there was a section of the website that did show the numbers for each champion. But in an area entitled something like "For Experienced Players."

merdragon11/18/2014, 1:34:52 AM3 votes

Website has been lackluster since open beta/release -_- You'd think they'd be able to hire a few people to keep the stats up (not to mention the missing stats) to date and do other maintenance but no. For the longest time in beta I think it was Amumu's despair claimed to have a 1.0 ap ratio... That sure wasn't accurate.

Edit: one of the older variations of the site did have champion cd but they removed it for who knows what reason.

MrSlowDie11/17/2014, 10:32:51 PM2 votes

  1. Kalista is released
  2. Goes to Riot champion website
  3. Kalista is not on the champion list

=_= okay Riot

Even HoN has the FULL ability description, including per level growths that you can see regardless of ability rank, right in the game client. And S2, the worst game management company possible, always keeps up with official information for new releases. If S2 can do this, so can you.

my guess is they want you to buy the champion and figure out that info in game. which is something you can't always figure out like how certain passives scale (bonus AD, total ad, health, level, etc.).

VerrKol11/17/2014, 7:47:38 AM1 votes

There's a huge problem with the burden of information for new players with this game. But that's true of literally any game. I have never played a single game where the official website was the best place to go for information about how to play a character or class. The reason for this is simple, it requires a lot of man hours in research and game play to be 100% up to date of the popular/best was to play a champion.

I would love to see a bit more work put in for the official pages, but the problem is that it requires man hours to create and constantly up date for each patch the champion changes. Why spend money to do it when fan sites will do it better for free? Frankly, Riot should just link to fan sites that have good information on these topics and leave it at that.

Frikgeek11/17/2014, 6:22:44 PM1 votes

Same reason why Pokémon games don't give you the full mathematical formula for damage or capture chance. Though an "advanced view" option that gives you full info would be nice. But you can still use 3rd party wikis for that so I don't really see the problem. Why would Riot bother doing it when fans can do it for free and on a site that most people already know?

If Riot suddenly added full info for all champs on their site do you really think people would stop checking the lol wikia for it? Most wouldn't even notice.

SIayton11/17/2014, 7:19:34 PM1 votes

They would have to update their website every time they patch. Most of those things are to get newer players into the game and new players generally aren't concerned with or wouldn't even understand ratios and such. If they're really interested, they can just look at it in game.

xTechCatX11/17/2014, 11:03:01 PM1 votes

Perhaps it a matter of how the game is actually advertised. Like LoL is a more "simple" version of Dota 1, or at least they made it seem this way. This makes me believe that they kept the champion pages simple because they don't want to overwhelm any new potential players.

Fisk11/18/2014, 2:07:52 AM1 votes

I feel like your point is good and the champion pages could use a little work but you also are just being an idiot. The show basically all of the other info except passives and CD's. It's not useless and most of the info you actually require is in there. I DO AGREE THEY SHOULD ADD CD'S AND BETTER PASSIVE DESCRIPTIONS, but dear lord man you are such a pitch forker. Learn the damn difference between constructive criticism and raging and being an a**. FYI by just actually playing a champion you can figure all of this information. This is incredibly lazy, like seriously can you not just play one game or even a custom for God's sake to figure this out if you are THAT desperate for a little more info on the champ.

7ha7guy77711/18/2014, 2:32:47 AM1 votes

is the info on MF accurate on the site? i haven't played her since s3 and having 0 AD scaling on a marksman seems a little weird

FantasySniper11/18/2014, 2:36:02 AM1 votes

Riot must answer for this crime.

iainB8511/18/2014, 2:30:47 PM1 votes

lc$

...but really, it does feel like they dump millions upon millions on eSports and have skeleton crews working on the actual game itself based on how quickly they push content out.

Gear Kitty11/19/2014, 11:15:43 PM1 votes

The closest I can guess is because some of the stats change patch to patch, and once a year there's a major overhaul of one system or another. Even Riot's internal bookkeeping is off enough of the time that I don't just assume what they say is actually how something works now. Case in point, Pantheon's Ult "Bug" that was a facet of his kit and balance from his conception until Braum's release patch. It would take a whole new TEAM to keep track of the changes, verify them, and update the site and client with them in a TIMELY manner. And that's just for the English version of the site/client.

It's a matter of accounting at that point; would hiring a new team in every region to keep the champ info up-to-date be worthwhile of an investment to warrant actually doing so?

It's apparently not, especially with the fan sites that do a better job than the Devs at keeping track of actual champ stats.
