I wasn't sure if this was a question or a statement to be honest. If it is a question, then I have to answer this way.
First of all, the state of the game is not great for a support - roaming or otherwise. There are so many solo-carry champions that can solo-lose the game currently that it makes the support role less of a factor than even last season. That is, we are currently seeing games where other lanes can go even - but a "solo-loss" champion can quickly feed their counterpart two to three kills with little to no effort.
Second, avoid or dodge any games where you suspect that you have a team composition that has a less than 50% chance of winning. If you see the usual solo-loss champions in your games, avoid them. Don't even get into games where you know that you as a support will have little to no impact. Have an autofilled ADC who picks Yuumi? Dodge. Sadly right now, this means A LOT of dodging. (Riot, fix your game.)
Third, pick supports that either will help you win the lane outright OR counter other champions in the game - should you get to middle or late game. (Riot seems to be trying to get rid of middle and late game - which is sad because typically this is where supports and adcs have typically shined. But what can you do?) This means taking support champs that can cause damage or engage (e.g., Brand, Zyra, Velkoz, Xerath, Leona, Thresh, Nautilus, etc.). In the alternative, look for supports that can heal, shield or CC for mid and late game. (Janna, Soraka, Nami, Braum, Zilean and Sona fit this latter group - but you want to pick these based on the comps, the player records and the other information you have at hand.)
Fourth, active and early warding is essential. Iron, bronze and silver players, to be honest, have little to no sense of map awareness. But a little vision goes a long way - even if it does trigger the dreaded melee of your team when they are two levels down versus a well-fed opponent. Pick the spots where the next battle will take place. Ward it "safely". Then either recall or get back with the rest of your team.
Fifth, know your builds and build according to the game that you are in or will be in. Pick the runes that fit the comps.
Sixth, if you have an adc that is terrible, don't be afraid to help mid or the jungle instead. (Don't be afraid to /muteall when you do this. by the way.) But do remember that you will be leeching experience from other lanes when you do this.
Seventh, try to be present for the team fights if you can. It's tough trying to put up vision on the baron pit or elder when you know that some genius wants to engage in constructive inting or pull the trigger on a teamfight - but you have to pick your spots. And still try to be at least within range when it does happen.
Eighth, and finally, be ready for the inevitable. Even when you get the jungle, adc and midlaners ahead, they can and often will still blow their leads. If that's the case, re-group and re-marshall your forces. At least, you have a source of income that allows you to afford some mediocre and somewhat useful utility items (which are reduced in power because Riot doesn't want to restrict their use to supports for some bizarre reason) even when your team sucks and can't afford their items.
