Seriously what is riot's problem with deciding how to match ranked players. (Oo catchy title)

(Thesis) I've been through every single rank over the last few seasons from bronze to diamond (excluding iron of course) and no matter what I keep taking away the same thoughts. Matchmaking is fundamentally confused, entirely.

(Background) The last three seasons I have mained exclusively tanks top lane with my backup role being caster/artillery mages mid lane. (probably a 90/10% playrate split there.) And I honestly never really played anything META at the time, hell I got to platinum in season 5? with only tank galio top lane, not exactly a popular decision. But regardless of whatever I played I almost always walk away with a sense that the other player was at least reasonably within my skill bracket probably within a couple of divisions in skill. In mid lane it was a bit more hit or miss, but then again It's my backup role, and I'm not too reliable in my placement with teamfights. As a result when playing mid I would often feel at least a little out matched. But this is just in a lane to lane to basis, but honestly over the last 2000 ranked games I've still felt more or less this way. (This is excluding matchups against champions during their bullshit phases, tanko, new releases, etc)

(Meat) But from what all I've personally seen, heard from friends, and even seen on the boards over the years, it appears that matchmaking starts dieing at bottom lane. The match quality drops exponentially for our duo lane opponents as I often see first blood, second blood, etc happen bottom lane and it's only gotten worse of the last couple of years. Back in season 5-6 bottom lane could got 1/4 total, but regardless of the rank of play they could still just forfeit farm and stop dieing. Right now (look at my last 10 games) You'll see the bottom lane go 1/10-0/15 within a 20-25 minute long game only. I honestly can only think of three reasons this keeps happening, and it really feels like riot keeps ignoring two of them. We have to either blame excessive damage in the support role, excessive ganking by bursty champions, or the skill disparity in the bottom lane is tremendous.

(Reaction) I don't really have any magical solutions for matchmaking but I have some recommendations.

  1. I'm in diamond (albeit D4) and I'm okay with waiting 5-10 minutes for a match if it's a good one, I'm currently sitting at like the top 1.5% of players, so I get making a good match can take time. THAT'S OKAY, for good players I think we can all agree to wait out a fair match.

  2. Prioritize skill similarities within bottom lane, then mid lane, then jungle, then top lane. This will insure the most potential for an even game. (Let's face it, top doesn't carry anywhere near as much as it used to)

  3. Either remove the MMR system or make rank progression more fluid and fair. Keep all LP gains normalized throughout iron -platinum. 25 lP for a win and 22-23 for a loss. (Numbers up to change) Remove promo games, but also remove demotion protection. Changing ranks should be a simple and non-defeating process. If a player wins a game they should promote up and if they lose the opposite, it should be a solid and consistent system. (I've lost 4-5 games at G4 at one point and not been demoted, this is immediately after being promoted to G4 mind you.)

  4. Remove streak LP, win or loss, but also remove blatantly terrible MMR matching. If a player streaks 10-15 wins in bronze they should not face silver/gold players, they should face other bronzes. When a player does EXTREMELY well consistently in any rank then there;s a GOOD chance that they don't belong there, and it's the most disgusting feeling when riot says screw you and your success. Making matches based on both ranked but ignoring it ultimately for MMR is unfair and stupid at best. Artificially stunting players growth is disrespectful and it makes riot act like they view the community as children. (Oh no jimmy, daddy riot knows you're actually supposed to be in bronze. 70% winrate being smacked down by unfair matchmaking, what?)

(5. Nerf damage by 40% wooo)

(Closing) At the end of the day if ranked matchmaking keeps being this unsatisfactory the playerbase will just keep dying.

[gotta add the composition structure to appease the fmod daddys.]

Idiots knowing they will be filled to support and refusing to become even remotely competent kinda impacts the lane. Jungle becoming less popular and a secondary fill for one of the highest knowledge roles is also gonna impact games quite a bit.

Welcome back to the Mid or Feed mentality.

To the best of my knowledge Riots been playing with positional MMR and MM, they gutted positional ranking thou.
